Looking for labor statistics? Information about a foodborne illness? A Civil War map? A song sung in 1834? Earthquake data? The tribal government of the Navajo Nation? No matter what your field of research is, the chances are that there will be publications issued by federal, state or local governments that will provide you with valuable information. So often overlooked, government publications are powerhouses of research, information, statistics, photos, data and everything in between.

To begin your research, start on our Government Publications page, which has essential links to government sources identified by our U.S. Government Documents Librarian, Mary Finley.

For example, the U.S. Federal Government’s official web portal USA.Gov (http://www.usa.gov/) and the Federal Government Web Links page are good places to explore subjects such as history, identity theft, health, nutrition, aging, crime, science or technology.

A wealth of information published by state and local governments on such topics as schools, elections and the environment can be found on our California and Los Angeles Government Web Links page.

Especially useful too is http://science.gov for anyone in the field of science, mathematics, computers, other technologies or science education.

What about African-American History? Or folk songs? Or the history of women? Or military history? One of the most interesting and enjoyable sources is the American Memory project by the Library of Congress at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html

If you have any questions about government publications or any other information resources, be sure to ask us. We welcome your questions!
