I love Geography - G.I.S. Day

Geographic Information Systems: Presentation, Analysis, and Handling of Spatial Information

Ongoing through December 23, 2009
Oviatt Library Lobby

Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, goes beyond mapping and storing locations and associated information to offer powerful tools for analysis of spatial data. Geographic Information Systems: Presentation, Analysis, and Handling of Spatial Information, our new Oviatt Library Lobby Exhibit, offers many fine examples. This exhibit presents a number of applications of GIS in environmental geography, sustainability studies, and demographics.

Also on display are cartographic tools that predate GIS and, only a couple of decades ago, were commonly used to draw the maps now routinely produced as GIS output. Once used almost exclusively by geographers and urban planners, GIS is now being used in academic disciplines across campus and in many aspects of public and private life. From delivering a pizza to delivering geotechnical services, GIS is behind the scenes. If you’ve ever used a GPS to help you drive to a destination or used an internet mapping website, you’ve used GIS and it is becoming increasingly likely that new college graduates will use GIS on the job.

The exhibit features contributions from James Hayes, Assistant Professor from the Department of Geography, Chad March, Geography major, and respected faculty members and students from the Department of Geography in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Curated by Eric Garcia, Psychology & Educational Psychology Librarian, Oviatt Library. For additional information, please call Eric Garcia at x6809.
