The Oviatt Library is a place of thought, research and study for our academic community.  In order to maintain an environment appropriate to our purpose, the following are the rules of behavior:

  1. Noise and disruptive behavior will not be permitted.
  2. The entire Library is a NO SMOKING area.  No tobacco products are allowed.
  3. Consumption of food is not allowed in the public areas of the building.
  4. Only bottled water and drinks in the Library's "Think Drink" spill-proof mug are allowed in public areas.  No other drink containers are permitted.
  5. Group study rooms are for use by groups of CSUN students with valid CSUN photo ID in their possession.  If the number of students falls below the posted minimum for ten minutes or longer, the right to use the group room is lost. Windows on all study rooms may not be covered.
  6. Computer or photocopy users must complete their work 15 minutes before closing time.
  7. Cellular phones may not be used in the Library.  Patrons should turn off or make silent all cell phones and pagers when entering the Library building.  In an emergency, when patrons must make or receive a cell phone call, they are required to move to the stairwells or within six feet of a payphone and use their phone quietly.  They should take their valuables with them.  A patron may never use a cell phone's camera or binocular features in the Library without permission from Library Administration.
  8. Lounge chairs and seating should remain in designated areas.  Only one lounge chair or seat per person is allowed.  No furniture is allowed in the halls or stairwells of the building.  Do not put feet on the furniture.
  9. Library materials and equipment may not be removed from their proper places (for example, newspapers and single issue periodicals may not be taken from the periodical reading room).  Certain materials may be restricted to use in certain areas.
  10. Bicycles, grocery carts, skates, skateboards and other wheeled vehicles, except baby strollers, wheelchairs and other conveyances for the disabled, are prohibited.
  11. Animals are prohibited, except for those working with persons with disabilities.
  12. Anyone taking photos or videos of the Library building or of Library users or staff must have permission of Library Administration.
  13. No selling or soliciting is permitted in the Library or on the Library porches.
  14. Handbills, circulars, banners or notices must have the prior permission of Library Administration before being posted on the Library premises or being available to our patrons.  Postings on the bulletin boards require permission from Associated Students.
  15. Use of the Library’s porches or lower level South patios must have the prior permission of Library Administration.
  16. The possession of firearms and other deadly weapons and dangerous or explosive chemicals is prohibited in the Oviatt Library and on all other state property by California Penal Code: and the CSUN Student Conduct Code:

Community Service Officers are retained to assist Library personnel in the enforcement of these rules.  Violations of the rules may result in removal from the Library and/or loss of Library privileges.  Violations of the criminal code or the student conduct code will be reported.
