Renowned scholar, prolific author and educator, Vern Bullough passed away on June 21st, 2006 after a long illness. Vern was a very special friend of the Library, and he will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to his wife, Gwen, his children and family.

Vern and his late wife Bonnie assembled one of the finest collections of material on sex and gender and, in 1973, they donated it to the Oviatt Library to be housed in Special Collections. Donations in the ensuing years more than doubled the size of the collection. This collection has become an extraordinary resource for researchers in the field of sex and gender. The resources are cataloged and accessible on the Library's online catalog.

Vern was a Professor (Emeritus) in the History Department at CSUN. He was also the Founding Director of The Center for Sex Research in the College of Social and Behavioral Science at CSU, Northridge. The Center's goal is to foster research and to further knowledge. Vern was also a Dean at SUNY Buffalo, an adjunct professor at USC, and a Fulbright scholar.

In addition, Vern was a champion of civil rights and he served on the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union for many years.

Vern was the author and editor of over 50 books and hundreds of articles. He was in demand as a speaker and he traveled the world lecturing. His many interests, his commitment to scholarship, his support of research and his world view made him an excellent and enjoyable companion to all who knew him. Vern's own web page may be found at: http://www.vernbullough.com/bullough/index.html.

The memorial service for Vern Bullough was held on September 30th, 2006 at 2:00 p.m., at the Steve Allen Theater of the Center for Inquiry. The Family has asked that contributions in honor of Vern Bullough may be made to the CSUN Oviatt Library, and will be directed to the endowment he established for the Vern and Bonnie Bullough Collection on Sex and Gender (http://library.csun.edu/Collections/SCA/SC/bullough.html). This endowment was dear to Vern's heart, as he spent much of his life compiling the resources that comprise this extraordinary collection.
