Virginia Prince, one of the co-founders of the Society for the Second Self (Tri-Ess), defines cross dressing or transvestism to mean "the wearing of the clothing commonly worn by members of the opposite gender." In her book she coins the term Femmiphiles to apply particularly to heterosexual men who express their feminine side through the wearing of women's clothing. That is the particular audience for this collection of 187 newsletters.

The newsletters are issued by local chapters of Tri-Ess (an educational and support group for heterosexual cross dressers) in the United States and independent groups here and abroad. The newsletters report local activities, discuss current topical issues, and in general serve as a forum for the interests and concerns of this cross dressing community. They are issued several times a year. Most are written, printed, and reproduced by members. They vary in length from a single sheet to ten or fifteen pages.

The collection is based on the substantial gift of Carol Beecroft donated to the Library in 1996. Additional gifts have filled out and expanded the collection.
