History

W. Chase Craig (1910 - 2002) illustrated, wrote and produced comic books from the mid 1930's until his retirement from Western Printing and Lithography in 1975. He graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1934 and started working for the Christian Science Monitor drawing Little Chauncy. The following year he moved to Hollywood where he started as assistant animator on Oswald Rabbit for Walter Lanz. He worked for Tex Avery then moved to the Los Angeles Daily News to help on the Charlie McCarthy newspaper strip. He developed and sold the syndicated strip Odd Bodkins. He joined Western Publishing soon after. In 1942 Craig enlisted in the Navy. During the war he worked at the Navy's "Vine Street Press" drawing illustrations for aviator training manuals. In 1950 he became an editor at Western Printing and Lithography, rising to Managing Editor and Executive Editor.

Western started a line of comic books that they would produce and print and Dell would publish. Craig wrote and drew the first issues of Bugs Bunny and Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies for the company. Western's Los Angeles office issued comics based on Walt Disney Studios, Walter Lantz, MGM, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Hanna-Barbara characters, and popular TV shows of the 1950s and 1960s. Dell split off from Western in 1962 and Western became the parent company of Gold Key and Whitman comics. Gold Key comics licensed many characters from Warner Bros., Disney, and Walter Lanz. The Whitman logo occasionally appears on some issues of Gold Key titles. Western ceased publishing comics in 1984.

Provenance

The collection has been assembled from two large gifts. In 1984 Chase Craig donated his personal collection of comic books to the University. These form Part I of the collection and are bound volumes. Bruce Craig donated the remainder of his father's comic collection and personal papers in 2002. These form Parts II and III of the collection. The comics arranged in Part II are all loose issues.

Organization

The collection is organized into three parts. Part I includes premiums from cold cereal boxes, one shots, large feature comics, four-color comics, bimonthlies and quarterlies issued by Dell Publishing Company, Famous Funnies, and Eastern Color from 1939-1960. Part II lists the Gold Key and Marvel comics published from 1957 to 1980. A few Dell unbound publications are listed in Box 30. His personal papers are gathered in Part III. It contains scrapbooks, comic strip art, and window display cartoons, production artwork, and correspondence from 1924-1979. Books included with the 2002 gift have been cataloged separately with a "collection added" entry for the Chase Craig Collection in our Library Catalog.
