Reading Room Rules

The Reading Room is open to anyone using Special Collections, University Archives, and Urban Archives Center materials. We ask that you exercise care when using the materials. The Reading Room rules are to improve service and ensure that the valuable books, manuscripts, documents, and archives will always be available.

  1. Readers are required to present identification (campus ID, California drivers license, or other valid current identification) to use the materials.
  2. To obtain materials, complete the Special Collections, University Archives, or Urban Archives Center reader registration form.
  3. Materials do not circulate outside the Reading Room.
  4. Please do not write on the materials. No pen and ink is permitted near the materials.
  5. Please observe the following practices for archival documents. Do not remove items from folders. The exact order and arrangement of papers must be maintained. If any mistake is discovered, notify a staff member. Do not rearrange items yourself.
  6. Books, book bags, briefcases, purses or other large personal items should be left near the door or with a staff person.
  7. Photocopying is permitted provided it will not cause damage to the material and does not violate the intent of the "Fair Use" doctrine (Copyright Statute, rev. 1987, section 107). Photocopying will be done by a staff person.
  8. There is no eating or drinking in the Reading Room.
  9. Please return all materials to a staff person.

Photoduplication

Photocopying and duplication of photographs is provided by Special Collections/Archives staff. Some collection items cannot be copied because of their fragile condition, donor restrictions, or other specified reason. Compliance with U.S. copyright regulations is the responsibility of the researcher.
Students, and campus faculty and staff will be charged duplication costs. Other off campus researchers will be charged an additional administrative fee.
