Description
Scope
Factiva provides full text of over 10,000 business and industry publications, and over 30,000 company reports from Reuters.
Restrictions and Software Requirements
- CSUN users (student, faculty, Staff) only.
Searching
The default search mode is Free Text, a keyword search with limits for Date, Source, Company, Subject, Industry, Region, and Language.
- Two or more words without boolean operators will generate a search for a phrase.
- NOTE: Be careful to select the date range you wish to search from the pull-down menu -- the default is "In the last 3 months"
- You can search the full article, or limit your search to headline, headline and lead paragraph, or author.
- Use the Sources menu to limit your Free Text search to a specific newspaper or journal. Follow the pop-up tooltips for adding and removing terms from your search.
- Use the Subject menu to limit your Free Text search to a specific indexed subject. Multiple subjects can be added using Boolean logic.

- use and, or, not
- Truncation
- use * for unlimited truncation. Example: bank* retrieves items containing bank, banks, banking, banker, bankruptcy. . .
use $n for truncation of up to 9 characters (n=limit of truncation). Example: bank$3 retrieves items containing bank, banks, banking, banker, but not bankruptcy.
- Proximity
- use w/n to find items with two words sequentially within n words of each other. Example: president w/3 bush retrieves items containing President Bush, President George Bush, President George W. Bush.
use nearn to find items with words in any within n words of each other. Example: Target near4 sales will find Target reported drop in sales, Target sales, Target posted sales
Results
- Display results by date or relevance.
- Click the Frames/No Frames link to the upper right of the results list to preview your current search terms. Click search terms under Search Preview to modify your search.

Managing Results
- Select individual results by checking the boxes next to them.
- Click one of the dark grey icons above the results list to view, email, print, or format selected results as HTML, RTF, PDF, or XML files for saving.
Viewing Results
- Click an article title to view an individual result. Select a custom view (full article or citation with keywords and indexing) from the drop-down menu to the right.
- Click the plus sign next to Related Factiva Intelligent Indexing to open a menu of indexed subjects and regions from which additional searches can be generated.
Additional Features
- Search 2.0 Beta -- features a Discovery Pane, a visual search tool that graphically displays the distribution of results according to date, subject cluster, companies industries, and other indexes. Note: Limited to resources in the past three months.
- News Pages - allows you to browse top news headlines and current issues of most popular sources for business news, industry news, and world news.
- Companies/Markets -- provides access to stock quotes and company profiles.
