Library Assignments  Spring 2013

Library Assignment 1 Due  Thursday February 7th by 11:55 pm on Moodle

APA Reference List Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is for you to:

(a) Locate credible sources of information in Kinesiology using the Oviatt Library databases.

(b) Distinguish between peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed sources of information.

(c) Create a correct reference list of sources using APA 6th edition format.

An important part of writing a professional paper is to properly cite your sources both within the paper in list format at the conclusion of the paper. This assignment will give you practice in properly formatting a reference list in one of the most common writing formats, the American Psychological Association (APA). Your submission should include the following: 5

A. A properly formatted APA reference list including a total of ten citations. All citations should be related to the broad field of kinesiology or one of the careers or subdisciplines (e.g., motor behavior, biomechanics, sport psychology, athletic training). Of the ten citations, eight (8) should be for peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles, and two (2) should be for non-peer-reviewed sources. It is not necessary that all citations relate to one another or have a common theme, only that they all relate to kinesiology. For this assignment, you do not need to actually read your sources or physically find them in the library.

B. On a separate page, answer the following questions:

1. Describe the procedures you used for finding your sources. What library databases did you use? What was the most challenging part about finding sources, and how did you overcome this challenge?

2. Which two citations are for non-peer-reviewed sources? How do you know this? What is the difference between a peer-reviewed and a non-peer-reviewed source?

Library Research Assignment 2  -Due Sunday March 31st by 11:55 pm on Moodle

Kinesiology Subdiscipline Paper

The purpose of this assignment for you to:

(a) Gather further information about a topic within a specific subdiscipline of interest.

(b) Integrate this information into a brief research paper on the topic.

(c) Demonstrate your ability to correctly cite your sources within the paper and create a proper reference list.

One purpose of KIN 200 is to expose you to all of the different subdisciplines that make up our field (Chapters 5 – 11). You are to choose one of these subdisciplines, and then search the chapter for a specific topic of interest (usually found in the "Overview" section). For example, if I chose Ch. 8: Motor Behavior, I might discover that "feedback" is one of the major research interests for a motor behaviorist. Once you choose your specific topic, your task is to write a 4-page mini-research paper on the topic. The paper should include the following components:

- An overview of the importance of the topic for professionals.

- Findings from research studies.

- Possible directions for future research in this area.

Your paper should include at least five (5) scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2008 and 2013 as references both within the text and in a reference list. You may cite your textbook, but it does not count as one of your five. You must also include an APA style reference list at the end.
