Search Plugins at CSUN

Introduction

What is a search plugin?
A search plugin is a tiny bit of programming that allows your web browser to search a specific website using the browser's built-in search feature. This search feature (called Instant Search in Internet Explorer and the Search Bar in Firefox) is usually found in the upper right hand corner of your browser window.

There are hundreds of search plugins available. Whenever a website has a search plugin available to install, the browser's search feature will change color to signal that availability.

Internet Explorer: Firefox:

Firefox's Highlighted Text Search Feature

Firefox allows you to search for words you select while viewing a web page. This makes it very easy to search for a book title or ISBN you see in online reviews.

  1. Select the search engine you wish to use from the search feature's pulldown menu.
  2. Select (highlight) any words in a web page.
  3. Right-click and choose Search [Search Engine] for "[your selected words]" from the popup menu.

Firefox opens a new tab and uses the currently selected Search Engine to search for your selected words.

Try it! Search for Sue and Lynn's new book using one the catalog search plugins:

Note: Internet Explorer does not have this feature at this time.

Library Catalog Plugins

There are five plugins available for the library catalog: keyword, title, author, subject and ISBN/ISSN. They are all available for browser installation at the Search Plugins for the Oviatt Library Catalog webpage. Click the links or select the desired plugin from the browser search feature's pull down menu to install and use them.

GOBI3 Search Plugin

Use the following plugin to search YBP's GOBI3 book selection website. It will do a broad search -- looking for your search terms in the title, author, ISBN, etc. You must be logged in to GOBI3 in order for this search plugin to work correctly. Click the link below or select "GOBI 3" from the browser search feature's pull down menu to install and use it.
