Congratulations Staff Service Merit Award Recipients

Ramon AlvaradoRamon Alvarado works in the Circulation Department of the Oviatt Library, the central place where books are checked in and out, retrieved from storage, and prepared for re-shelving. Ramon began as a student employee over twenty years ago, and is now an anchor in the department, frequently going above and beyond his duties. He is an expert in the use and mechanics of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System. He serves as a frequent tour guide for groups from kindergartners to library professionals who learn how this robot-controlled storage facility works.

Library patrons ask for Ramon; they know he will solve their problem courteously and calmly. He teaches student workers customer service, provides guidance for them, and serves as a peacemaker when the occasional conflict arises among library patrons. Ramon’s contribution to the security and emergency team ensures that the Library is a safe and secure place to study.

Dean ArnoldDean Arnold supervises the Music & Media department in the Oviatt Library managing services and access to the CD, Video, and sheet music collections as well as the University Video Network. Dean has been working to bring an online video service to the Oviatt Library that will improve showing films in the classroom, expanding the reach of the Library’s collection.

Dean’s work is apparent to everyone entering the Oviatt Library because he is in charge of the Lobby Exhibits, interacting with exhibitors and managing installations. This year, he encouraged a staff member to mount an exhibit based on the Common Reading Program’s book, The Soloist.  His staff and student workers get both a boss and a mentor. Dedicated to quality service, he takes survey results and collaborates with colleagues to improve processes.  His service on task forces and committees and his regular contributions beyond the scope of his work exemplify commitment.
