An informed Lecturer is a powerful activist!

Greetings Lecturers:

Please join the Faculty Senate, Associated Students, and the Unions representing Cal State Northridge faculty and staff for a very important “budget fight back” meeting this Thursday, March 13, 2008, from 12-1 p.m. in the University Student Union, Grand Salon.  This meeting is occurring on all 23 campuses of the CSU to launch the formation of an “alliance” between CFA, administration, student groups, and campus staff unions to raise awareness about possible funding cuts and advocate for proper funding for the system. On page 3, I have included a list of ten things you can do to help beginning with adding your name to the CSU Alliance by signing and returning the form on page 4.

The all-campus budget meeting will be followed by a Pension & Benefit Workshop for all faculty, librarians, coaches, and counselors from 3:30 p.m. -5:30 p.m. Jonathan Karpf, CFA Lecturer Representative and CFA Faculty Rights Representative, CSU San Jose, will facilitate a discussion on a range of topics that will enable you take advantage of your CalPERS benefits.  See flyer on page 2 for more information and RSVP today!

Look for the new CFAeNews published by the CSUN Chapter of the California Faculty Association coming to your inbox soon which designed to keep you up to date on the latest chapter and statewide information.  In this issue, I reiterate the need for you to “show up” to executive board meetings, faculty rights seminars, etc. to ensure that the best decisions a made for those who are “not in the room.” Unlike ever before, increased uncertainty demands your presence.  In the words of Bishop Desmond Tutu, “If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” In the final analysis, the mouse could be YOU!

THE STATE BUDGET AND THE CSU

JOIN THE ALLIANCE FOR THE CSU

To protect the future of the California State University, a coalition of higher education supporters has banded together to create the “Alliance for the CSU.”

The Alliance seeks to educate lawmakers and the community about the fact that the CSU is the solution to California’s economic challenges, not the problem.

The Alliance for the CSU includes those who care about the future of the state and its state university system, among them students, alumni, faculty, CSU staff, administrators, parents of CSU students, employers, church leaders, labor union members, and people who depend on and enjoy the many assets the California State University adds to our communities and cities.

To learn more about the Alliance and find out how you can get involved, go to: http://www.allianceforthecsu.org/

SAN MARCOS CAMPUS BUDGET MEETING A SUCCESS

A standing-room-only crowd greeted San Marcos campus President Karen Haynes, CFA chapter President Janet Powell, and other campus union and student leaders at CSUSM’s Campus-Wide Budget Meeting on Monday.

The more than 300 people who filled the Arts Theater and overflowed into the lobby partook in a serious discussion of the governor’s proposed budget cuts. Urging students, staff and faculty to take action for the CSU and to become a part of the Alliance for the CSU, Presidents Haynes and Powell described the gravity of the statewide budget crisis.

Haynes said San Marcos alone stands to lose $6 million if the governor’s proposed budget is adopted. She said thousands of potential students – both high school freshmen and community college transfers -- could be turned away and the economic impact would radiate out to the communities in north San Diego County.

She called on CSU supporters to reach out to “our community friends and our supporters in business and commerce” to tell the legislature about the need to fund the CSU.

Powell drew cheers from the crowd when she said “We can’t just sit by and let this happen to us without putting up a fight.”

As they left the crowd grabbed up supplies of signs, buttons, sign up cards, and flyers.

Local news media including CBS Channel 8, Univision 17 and the San Diego Union-Tribune covered the event.  See some of the clips at http://www.calfac.org/inthenews.html
