HOW TO USE FOREIGN BROADCAST INFORMATION SERVICE (FBIS) ON CD-ROM   

The U.S. Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) contains the full-text of the Daily Reports of this Agency. FBIS monitors news sources in various countries and publishes information on political, social, economic and other issues. The quarterly CD-ROM disks cover the period from July 1996 to present.

SEARCHING THE FBIS DATABASE

The CD-ROM disks are located next to the workstation behind the Reference Desk designated for accessing selected government documents. The call no. for FBIS CD-ROMs is: D856 .D38 followed by date. Follow the steps below to search FBIS:

SEARCHING THE CD-ROM DISKS FOR THE PERIOD 1996-1998: WINDOWS VERSION

  1. Locate and insert the desired CD-ROM disk into the CD-ROM player.
  2. Click on the appropriate date from the home page, then click "OK."
  3. Type terms to be searched. Fill out additional boxes if applicable. You may also click the arrow to the right of each box to access a words list; clicking on a word will add it to the search box. The truncation symbol is an asterisk (*). To search a phrase, put it in quotation marks.

                  Example: "human rights" AND china
  4. When done, click "search."
  5. Choose from the Search Results. Double clicking on an entry will display the document.
  6. To perform a new search, click on the "X" at the top right of the report screen to close it. Click on the search button on the tool bar and choose either "new search" or "select search template."

Exiting the system

When finished searching, click on the exit icon at top of the screen. Replace the CD-ROM inside its caddy and return to its original location.

Accessing FBIS prior to July 1996

The Library owns selected Daily Reports prior to 1996 on microform. They are located in the ASRS. To request these go to the Microform area on the 4th floor, East Wing. Selected printed indexes to these reports are located in the same area and have various call numbers. Consult the Oviatt Library catalog under the title: Daily Report.
