I. BOOKS-- SUBJECT ACCESS

For information regarding the use of the Online Computer Catalog (Innovative) consult a separate handout entitled: How to Use the CSUN Library's Online Catalog. Before searching for books by subject, consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) (large red volumes located near the library reference desk.
Some of the important subject heading and subheadings in computer science include:

Computer programs(covers works limited to computer programs only.)
Computer software(works on computer programs along with documentation such as manuals, diagrams, operating instructions, etc.)
Computers (works on modern electronic computers first developed after 1945. In LCSH, this term is considered broader (i.e. BT) than the terms: Electronic data processing and Electronic digital computers.
Programming languages (Electronic computers) Note: Names of all specific software, hardware, and program languages may not be listed in LCSH. However, these may be searchable as subject headings. For names of languages add the subheading: (Computer program language). Example: Pascal (Computer program languages).
Use subheading-- Data Processing for works on the recording and handling of information about a subject by means of mechanical or electronic equipment as well as computerized aspects and applications of a subject.
Example: Business-- Data Processing.

Published by Association for Computing Machinery, this annual source indexes books, journals, conferences proceedings, and reports. Access is provided through several indexes including, author, keyword, category, and source indexes.

Applied Science and Technology Full Text. Library has: v.1- 1958-1995. Not currently recieved in print. (Z7913 .I7 - Third Floor)

INSPEC database is the computer version of Computer and Control Abstracts ( Floor3 (Ref) QA76 .C548 for latest 5 years in print and older issues are stored in the ASRS); Electrical and Electronics Abstracts ( Reference Room Z5833 .E37 for latest 5 years in print and older issues are stored in the ASRS); and Physics Abstracts ( Reference Room QC1 .P46 for latest 5 years in print and older issues are stored in the ASRS).

Internet PC Abstracts (formerly known as Microcomputer Index and Microcomputer Abstracts). Library has 1986 to 1998) (QA75.5 .M52 - Floor 3). No longer received at CSUN in print or online. A more recent service established in 1980, this covers microcomputers, software, peripherals, programming languages etc. Subject and product indexes provided.

Engineering Index Annual New York, Engineering Index, Inc. v. 1- 1906- (ref Z5851 .E62 - in the ASRS) Now available online at Engineering Index Compendex Web
Covers international literature of engineering. Several hundred journals, some in foreign languages. Also available via Engineering Index Compendex Web on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/Find_Resources/Databases/index.html#E).

Microcomputer Index and Microcomputer Abstracts. Library has 1986 to 1998. (ref QA75.5 .M52 - Floor 3). No longer received at CSUN in print or online. Known by various titles over the years which include Microcomputer Index, Microcomputer Abstract, as well as Internet PC Abstracts. Wiley InterScience 1996- Wiley InterScience is a full-text resource of journal articles as well as indexing hundreds of online books and several Wiley reference works.

A comprehensive guide to currently available integrated circuits, microcomputer boards, development systems, gate arrays, design automation software and hardware, etc. It was updated by quarterly supplements, IC Updates.
