Professors Erin Matthews and Anu Shakur
HELPFUL HINTS TO FINDING ANSWERS TO THE ASSIGNMENT

Library Assignment (20 points)

Read all requirements carefully!!!

Please DO NOT SUBMIT THIS SHEET TO Professor Matthews or Shakur.   This is NOT your assignment sheet only a guide to help you answer her questions.

During your library orientation, it is imperative that you DO NOT sit next to a buddy.  Your attention to Doris will not only demonstrate to her that you are responsible, respectful, interested college students, but it will also ensure that you understand this very important first step to conducting research.  If you don’t understand Doris, please ask her to clarify; DO NOT ask your neighbor.  Follow along with Doris.  DO NOT start searching for things on your own; stay with Doris–even if you are an expert library searcher.  DO NOT check your email during this orientation; follow along with what Doris instructs you to do.

All items must be relevant to your research topic.  This is unrelated to the Simerly and Supplemental articles.  This is your topic that we have been discussing in class.

__/ 2 1.     List 2-3 resources from Doris’s list of FCS Selected Library Resources that relate to your topic of interest.   List the roman numeral section heading and the name of the resource.

 HOW TO FIND THE ANSWER:
The answer to the question at my FCS Bibliography can be found at: http://library.csun.edu/dhelfer/fcsbib.html and look specifically at parts III, IV, and V where I describe the different databases and the subjects they cover.

__/1    2.   Identify a professional dictionary or encyclopedia that could be used for defining terms related to your topic of interest ____________________________________________

HOW TO FIND THE ANSWER:
Look up your  profession as a subject in the Library's online catalog which can be  found at: http://suncat.csun.edu/.  For example: nutrition - encyclopedia or Fashion Design - encyclopedia to see if the library has any books on the your profession.  If they do click on the subject heading and you will see the list of books that the library has and where you can find it in the library.  Hint if they do not have a dictionary or encyclopedia on  your profession try the broader subject  (ex. for nutritionist try nutrition).

__/4    3.  Give three Boolean searches using “and,” “or,” “not” you used to find information on your topic of interest and indicate the number of matches you received.  List the database you used for each search

search terms__________________________________________# of matches ______

                database_________________________________________________________________

search terms___________________________________________     # of matches ______

                database_________________________________________________________________

search terms___________________________________________     # of matches ______

                database_________________________________________________________________

 HOW TO FIND THE ANSWER:

To find books you can search in the library's online catalog which can be found at: http://suncat.csun.edu/ but to find scholary journal research articles you can start at the library homepage at: http://library.csun.edu/ and then click on Find Articles & Research Data and that takes you to: http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/ and from there either choose a database under Search for General Information Sources or choose a subject under the Search for articles by subject. Remember that there are four different specialized areas under Family and Consumer Sciences so choose the one that mostly closely matches your area of specialization in FCS.
If your topic is about children's nutrition, then click on FCS - Nutrition + Food Science. Then choose one of the databases listed there. Once in the database you can
do your search using the keywords children and nutrition, and then just note how many results you got.

_/10. 4. Print out the full reference information and full text article for five scholarly research articles (not magazines or newspapers, ask a librarian or me if in doubt) that seem relevant to your topic of interest.  NO book reviews, scholarly research studies only.  Remember the sections we discussed in class.  Highlight the title, author, and publication information and attach.  Save a copy to work on your annotated references assignment (or do the annotations before you turn in this assignment).  Staple all pages of each article together.  Write #4 in the upper right hand corner of the first page of each printout.

HOW TO FIND THE ANSWER:

Remember to search the database of your choice by the keywords that must be there for you to want to read the article.  Some databases such as EBSCO-HOST, INFOTRAC and Lexis -Nexis have lots of full text, other databases that don't directly have full text may have a links to where you can get the full text by clicking on the SFX button which looks like this: IMAGE OF THE SFX BUTTON.  If you find that full text is available click on that and you should be taken either to the full text of that article either as an html text file or as a Adobe Acrobat PDF file (this is just as it looks in the publication).   Click on File and then Print to print and html file you see on the screen but click on the printer image if you are viewing an Adobe Acrobat File.

__/2    5.  Find 1 scholarly research article on your topic of interest in the library and photocopy it with the reference information and attach.  Highlight the title, author, and publication information and attach.  Write #5 in the upper right hand corner of the first page of the printout.  Staple all pages of this article together.  Retain a copy of the article for your annotated references assignment (or do the annotation for this article before you turn in this assignment).

HOW TO FIND THE ANSWER:

This question is trying to make sure you use a print journal in the library.  All print journals are on the 4th Floor of Oviatt Library or in storage and can be called out of storage by clicking on the request button in the  library's online catalog, which can be found at: http://suncat.csun.edu/.    Choose a database depending on your subject area of interest.   If you want to see all the library databases you can check out the list from: http://library.csun.edu/Find_Resources/Databases.  Click into the database(s) of greatest interest and relevance to your topic.  Put in the keywords which have to be there for you to want the articles and press enter to do your search.  Once you find an article of interest to you click on the Find Full text as well.  If the SFX pop-up says there is no Full text available but the Library does own this item click on that link to get into the Library's catalog and find out the location of the item in the catalog.
