A literature search for journal articles requires locating a suitable indexing or abstracting database and learning to use it. For historical topics you may also need to browsing the issues of a print or several print indexing and abstracting services which are needed to cover the subject in sufficient depth. Below are some suggested indexes that maybe of interest to students in Family Consumer Sciences.
Academic Search Elite (EBSCOHost) is a computerized source, not available in print form. It covers a selection periodicals, some of which are scholarly, in all subjects. Abstracts to over 3,000 journals (over 1,700 peer-reviewed journals) with full text to 1200 of the journals, 1990-to the present.
Child Development Abstracts. (HQ750 . A1 C47 - Floor 2). Not computer searchable and not currently received. Library has 1928-1993.
Education Index. (Index Table - Z5813. E23 - Reference Room). A good source for child development and home economics education. Important because of its coverage of the major home economics journals. Also available on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/Find%5FResources/Databases/#E).
Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) and Resources in Education (RIE). (Index Table 6 - Reference Room).
Broad coverage of journals (CIJE) and reports (RIE--library has these in microfiche by "ED-number" and the most recent years have full-text online availability) in child development and home economics education. Contains abstracts for older reports but most recent years may have full text availability. Note: distinguish journal references by "EJ" numbers and report references by "ED" numbers preceding citations in ERIC. Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature ( Index Table - Reference Room).
Covers popular magazines such as Time and Vogue, but few scholarly periodicals included. Current Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature is not available at CSUN but the Reader's Guide Retrospective is available via the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/Find_Resources/Databases/index.html#R).
Expanded Academic Index (Infotrac) and InfoTrac OneFile (both can be found at: http://library.csun.edu/Find_Resources/Databases/index.html#I) are computerized sources, not available in print form. It covers a selection of periodicals, some of which are scholarly, in all subjects. InfoTrac OneFile indexes all of the Gale periodicals; it has over 9700 journals with full text to 5547 journals, 1980-
Lexis/Nexis is another excellent source for business and news information via the web at Lexis-Nexis on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/Find_Resources/Databases/index.html#L ).
Psychological Abstracts. (Index Table - Reference Room).
Covers child development and psychology, aging, adolescence, etc. Also psychological aspects of food, fashion and interior design. PsycInfo (online version of Psychological Abstracts), is available via PsycInfo (formerly PsycLit) and is available via the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/Find_Resources/Databases/index.html#P
) Coverage goes back to 1887.
Social Sciences Index. (Index Table 5 - Reference Room).
Covers a comparatively small, but high quality, selection of journals in psychology and sociology. A high percentage of journals are held in the Library. Also available via Social Science Abstracts on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/Find_Resources/Databases/index.html#S). Go down the page until you find the Social Sciences Abstracts (SocSciAbstracts) database.
