1. INTRODUCTION

         

Family Consumer Sciences, as taught at CSUN, covers many different subjects in the major disciplines of science, social science, and humanities. This is, therefore, a highly selective bibliography. You are urged to consult the library catalog and other specific library guides, e.g. Nutrition and Foods, for more detailed information.
 

2. INDEXES/ABSTRACTS/COMPUTER SEARCHABLE DATABASES OR
STALKING THE ELUSIVE JOURNAL ARTICLE

A literature search for journal articles requires locating a suitable database and learning to use it. For historical topics you may also need to browsing the issues of a print or several print indexing and abstracting services which are needed to cover the subject in sufficient depth.   Below is more detailed information about databases that maybe of interest to students in Family Consumer Sciences than can be found at the Family + Consumer Sciences Database links at: http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/subject/family-consumer-sciences
 

ABI/Inform is a Computerized index to business periodical articles with abstracts. Not available in print. Available via the web at ABI/Inform Dateline, ABI/Inform Global and  ABI/Inform Trade & Industry.

Academic Search Elite (EBSCOHost) is a computerized source, not available in print form.  It covers a selection periodicals, some of which are scholarly, in all subjects.  Abstracts to  over 3,000 journals (over 1,700 peer-reviewed journals) with full text to 1200 of the journals, 1990-to the present.

Good for costume/fashion, textiles, and interior design. Available on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#A). Choose the Art Index database.

ArtStor Use ArtStor

Biological Abstracts. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
Coverage includes food science and nutrition. Also available via Biological Abstracts on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#B). If you need information prior to 1998 choose FirstSearch2 and then choose the choose BasicBiosis.

Biological and Agricultural index. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
Covers food science and nutrition.  For more current articles see Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews and Food Science and Technology Abstracts ( Reference Room TX341 .F75  Most recent issues are in the Reference Room and older issues are on Floor 3)

Business Index (1982-) with Full Text (1994-) Use Business Full Text on WilsonWeb

Business Periodicals Index (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes). Covers the economic and marketing aspects of the fashion, clothing, textile, and food industries. Also good for consumer issues.   Also available on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/).   Choose the Business Index

Chemical Abstracts. (Reference Room QD1 .A51 Not currently received. Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes)
A comprehensive, but complex, source for textiles, food.    Search Chemical Abstracts using SciFinder Scholar (requires installation of the SciFinder client on your personal desktop). Abstracts books, periodicals, serials, patents, reports, dissertations, government documents, etc.; gives exhaustive, worldwide coverage of new information in the fields of chemistry and chemical technology. Subject coverage is relevant to food science and nutrition.

Child Development Abstracts. (HQ750 . A1 C47 - Floor 2).   Not computer searchable and not currently received. Library has 1928-1993.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCO)   (Older print indexes no longer received and stored in ASRS Z6675.N7 C8) Indexes over 3,000 nursing and allied health journals, with cited references from 1,600 journals; provides full-text access to many journals and other sources, 1937-

Consumers' Index to Product Evaluations and Information Sources. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
Good for articles about the consumer movement as well as for evaluations (use subject index in back) and not computer searchable.

Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) and Resources in Education (RIE). (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
Broad coverage of journals (CIJE) and reports (RIE--library has these in microfiche by "ED-number" and the most recent years have full-text online availability) in child development and home economics education.  Contains abstracts. Note: distinguish journal references by "EJ" numbers and report references by "ED" numbers preceding citations in ERIC. Also available via ERIC on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#E).  

Dissertation Abstracts International. (Check Library catalog for current location).
The Library does not own most of the actual dissertations, but can help you acquire them through Interlibrary loan as  the dissertations themselves usually reside only at the University where the dissertation was done.  Also available on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#D).  Then select the Dissertation Abstract database. 
 

Education Index. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).  A good source for child development and home economics education. Important because of its coverage of the major home economics journals.  Also available on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#E).

Expanded Academic Index (Infotrac) and InfoTrac OneFile(both can be found at: http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#I) are computerized sources, not available in print form. It covers a selection of periodicals, some of which are scholarly, in all subjects. InfoTrac OneFile indexes all of the Gale periodicals; it has over 9700 journals with full text to 5547 journals, 1980-

Factiva Dow-Jones and Reuters Use Factiva.

Food Science and Technology Abstracts. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes)
Provides comprehensive international coverage. Online version of this database is only available via a mediated search. If you need an online search of this database done contact Doris Helfer at doris.helfer@csun.edu to request an appointment or for further information about such a search.

Gale PowerSearch See Gale PowerSearch to search across several databases simultaneously: Infotrac OneFile, Expanded Academic ASAP, General Reference Center Gold, Health Reference Center Academic, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Business and Company ASAP.

General Science Index. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
An index to articles from both layman-level and professional science periodicals in all science fields. Also available via General Science Abstracts on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#G).  Choose the General Science Abstracts database

Government Documents Catalog. Available via U.S. Government Documents on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/GovernmentPublications).   Covers U.S. Government publications from July 1976 to the present.  Includes documents on such topics as consumerism, environment, nutrition, child care, etc.  The Library has many government documents received under a depository program. Most are electronically available through the library's online catalog. See a reference librarian for help. 
 

Index Medicus. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes). A major source for nutrition, dietetics, geriatrics, pediatrics, and psychiatry. Subject coverage is relevant for nutrition and dietetics. Medline is available in the library at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#M).   Also available via the web at PubMed is available via the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#P).

INSPEC database is the computer version of Computer and Control Abstracts (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes); Electrical and Electronics Abstracts ( Reference Room Z5833 .E37 for latest 5 years in print and older issues are stored in the ASRS); and Physics Abstracts ( Reference Room QC1 .P46  for latest 5 years in print and older issues are stored in the ASRS). 

International Political Science Abstracts- abstracts 900 journals from 1989-     (available on the web at: http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#I)

Lexis/Nexis is another excellent source for business and news information via the web at Lexis-Nexis on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#L ).

Mergent Online 1996- Use Mergent Online. Replaces Moody's Manuals. Includes US and foreign company annual reports.

Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes)   Good for human nutrition.  Available online at: (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#N)

ProQuest Databases Use ProQuest Databases ABI/INFORM Dateline, ABI/INFORM Global, ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry, Dissertations and Theses (Humanities and Social Sciences), EIU ViewsWire, Ethnic NewsWatch, GenderWatch, Hoover's Company Records, OxResearch, Proquest Newspapers, Snapshots North America, APS Online, Chicago Defender (Historical; includes Daily Defender), Los Angeles Times (Historical), New York Times (Historical).

Psychological Abstracts. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print abstracts).
Covers child development and psychology, aging, adolescence, etc. Also psychological aspects of food, fashion and interior design. PsycInfo (online version of Psychological Abstracts), is available via PsycInfo (formerly PsycLit) and is available via the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#P) Coverage goes back to 1887.

Public Affairs Information Service (P.A.I.S.) (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
Very useful for consumerism and any public policy issues. Covers not only periodicals but also books and government documents.  No longer received in print or available online from CSUN. It has been replaced by International Political Science Abstracts (available on the web at: http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#I)

PubMed 1950s- Use PubMed. Free public access. (Includes MeSH thesaurus) Several databases, some Full Text.

Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature and Reader's Guide Retrospective (http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/alphabetical#R) (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
Covers popular magazines such as Time and Vogue, but few scholarly periodicals included. 

Science Citation Index. Philadelphia, Institute for Scientific Information. Library has: 1962- (Reference Room and older eds. in ASRS) A unique index covering all of the sciences; provides a means of tracing a subject forward in time by referring to the work in which it was originally reported; also has a subject section.  

ScienceDirect (Elsevier) access to the full text of over 1,100 journals. Select the Search tab or the Journals tab.

Scitopia (open access) Use Scitopia

Social Sciences Index. (Check Library catalog for current location of older print indexes).
Covers a comparatively small, but high quality, selection of journals in psychology and sociology. A high percentage of journals are held in the Library. Also available via Social Science Abstracts on the web at URL (http://library.csun.edu/subsoc.html). Go down the page until you find the Social Sciences Abstracts (SocSciAbstracts) database.

NOTE: CSUN Family  Consumer Sciences Dept. theses are all shelved under the call number TX 165 .Z95 on the 4th floor or in storage in the AS/RS.   They are cataloged under the subject "Dissertations, Academic -- CSUN -- Home Economics"; for older theses or ; and either "Family Environmental Sciences" for more recent ones or for theses done starting 2003/04 academic year  use the department's newest name "Family Consumer Sciences".

Remember to use the Library of Congress Subject Headings (red books behind the reference desk) to obtain a list of all pertinent subject headings for your search.
