A Message from the Dean: Building Upon the Power of Partnership

eNews Edition: Spring 2014

The Oviatt Library has been engaged in productive partnerships for many years.  Last fall we joined together with CSUN’s Division of Information Technology to create a special IT Help Desk in the new Learning Commons.  We also opened up a space in the Library building for the Learning Resource Center (LRC) to facilitate campus tutoring services and to prepare for future collaborative initiatives between the Library and the LRC.  We even partnered with the CSUN University Corporation to build a coffee house in the lobby of the Library, a highly successful cooperative venture that brings more students into the Library and provides them with the necessary physical fuel to study, research, and write.

Events held during the Spring of 2014 will demonstrate once again our commitment to partnerships.  As detailed elsewhere in this newsletter, the Library has for many months been collaborating with the campus Pride Center, the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, and the CSUN Queer Studies Program to co-sponsor the “Sex in the Library” symposium, to be held the week of April 28.  The Copyright Workshop, scheduled for April 24, is co-sponsored by the Library and by the Office of Faculty Development.  WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) is a unique cooperative agreement between the Oviatt Library and a board of engineers, scientists and educators, all of us dedicated to the goal of encouraging women to prepare for and thrive in careers related to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

As the Dean of the Oviatt Library at California State University, Northridge, I invite you to become a partner with us in our many endeavors.  You can support us as a partner in several different ways, including financial contributions, volunteering, or by attending our special events in the Library.  However you decide to join forces with us, your encouragement is greatly appreciated!

Mark Stover, Ph.D.
