Copying a Guide: Special Instructions

Overview: Course and Subject guides are actual Drupal books, consisting of one parent page and one or more child pages, accessed through tabbed navigation. You cannot copy a whole guide at once, only individual pages, then assign them as children of a new guide using the Book Outline tool.

After you've logged in, go to My Pages and Guides and click the title of the guide you want to copy (or the guide that has a tab in it you want to copy).

To copy an entire guide:

  1. On the "top" or parent page, click the Clone tab. This will create a temporary draft copy of the page. The clone is not saved until you actually click Save.
  2. Edit the Title of the clone (all clones automatically say "Clone of..." in the title).
  3. Edit the body of the cloned page as desired, and add or subtract guide blocks.
  4. Edit the Page Address field to reflect the Subject or Class Code of your new guide  (Remember: no '.html', no spaces, underlines or special characters).
  5. Pop open the Book Outline tool near the bottom and set the Book field to "create new book." This creates a new guide, to which child pages can be added.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Go back to your original guide and Clone the child pages one by one.  Before saving each page, be sure to reassign the cloned child to your new book, by popping open the Book Outline tool and selecting the title of your new guide.
  8. To change the order of the child pages in your new guide, use the Outline tab at the top to drag the pages into the correct order.

To copy a single page from one guide to another guide

  1. Make sure the parent guide to which you want to add the page already exists, and has been made into a new book (see "Create a Course or Subject Guide," step 12).
  2. Navigate to the guide tab you want to copy and click the Clone tab.
  3. Edit the Title of the clone (all clones automatically say "Clone of..." in the title).
  4. In the cloned guide tab, pop open the Book Outline tool near the bottom. Set the Book field to the title of the guide you want to assign the cloned guide tab to.
  5. Click Save.
