Adding Rules, Jumps (Anchors), and Special Characters
Horizontal Rule
- To insert a horizontal rule, select Insert > Horizontal Rule
from the top menu bar.
- The default width is 100%, but you can change this by right-clicking on
the line and selecting Properties. (see WARNING)
Jumps
You can insert links or "jumps" to points within your document
using anchors. An anchor marks the location of material in your page. Anchors
are useful in very long web documents because they bring users directly
to that material, rather than just to the top of the page. To insert an
anchor, select Insert > Section Anchor.
- The Section Anchor dialog box will require that you enter a name for your
anchor. The name should include no spaces.
- To link to the anchor:
- Select the text you want to link, right click and select Insert link . . .. A list of "Drafts and Recent Pages" will pop up, at the top of which will be the document you are working on (see below).
- If the HREF box is not visible at the bottom, click the Advanced button to reveal Advanced input options.
- Highlight a document from the list. You will see its URL load automatically into the HREF box.
- Select a link from the Section anchor box. Click OK to create the link.

- To link to an anchor on the main library web site:
- Select the text on your page you wish to link, then in the objects toolbar above click Link > Browse to Web Page. The "Insert Link" dialog will open.
- If the HREF box is not visible at the bottom, click the Advanced button to reveal Advanced input options.
- Click the Browse button. A mini browser-window will open, allowing you to surf to a page on the Oviatt Library web site.
- When you find the right page, click OK. Contribute will copy the appropriate web address into the HREF box in the "Insert Link" dialog.
- Select a link from the Section anchor box. Click OK to create the link.
Special Characters
- From the top menu toolbar, select Insert > Special Characters
for a pop-up menu of the most common special characters used in English-language
documents.
- If you select Other (at the bottom of the menu), the
"Insert Other Character" dialog contains additional non-English
and scientific characters. Click the character you wish to insert, then
click OK.
WARNING: Contribute
uses deprecated markup to achieve rule-width formatting. Although the current
W3C validating tool and accessibility checkers don't seem to mind, it may
pose a problem for your page in the future.
