Dreamweaver Orientation Part One:
Setting preferences

In the top toolbar select Edit > Preferences. The preferences dialog will appear.

Dreamweaver Preferences dialog

Preferences dialog: when you select a category in the left section, the contents of the main section will change. Categories to edit are highlighted.

  1. General (optional): Click the Change Workspace button to choose either Dreamweaver MX or Dreamweaver 4 interface (subsequent instructions assume Dreamweaver MX).
  2. Accessibility: Check the first five boxes.
  3. Code Format: Make sure Centering is set to "Use DIV tag" (<CENTER> tag is deprecated)
  4. Code Hints (optional): These settings affect how Dreamweaver acts when you edit your pages in Code View.
    1. Enable Auto Tag Completion: uncheck (can be annoying)
    2. Enable Code Hints: check (can be helpful; make sure all menus in the box following are selected)
  5. Code Rewriting: Make sure the last box is unchecked, or links to databases may produce code the W3C doesn't like.
  6. Preview in Browser: Choose primary and secondary browsers that Dreamweaver will use to preview your page when you press F12 and Ctrl-F12, respectively.
  7. Quick Tag Editor: Check both boxes.
