How to Donate Books

Below are some frequently asked questions about book donations to the Friends. For additional information, please contact us by email at friends.library@csun.edu or (818) 677-2638.

What donations are accepted?

The Friends only accepts unconditional donations of books, compact discs, videos, DVD's and non-musical audiocassettes. We accept all types of books from textbooks to paperbacks. All types of compact discs, DVDs and videos are accepted.

Note: Complete runs of magazines can only be accepted with prior approval by the subject librarian.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, each donation is tax deductible per 501(c) 3 charitable organization law. Each donor is given a Deed of Gift to fill out. The donor estimates the value of the gift donation. We cannot discuss the value of any donation. Please check with your accountant for the latest tax laws concerning book donations to the Library.

Make a copy of your Deed of Gift for your records prior to mailing it back to the Library. The Deed will be processed and you will receive an acknowledgement letter from the University Foundation and the Library. The letter from the University Foundation is used for IRS purposes.

How do I donate to the Friends?

Donations can either be scheduled for drop off at the Library or pick up at your office or home. Please call (818) 677-2638 or email us at friends.library@csun.edu. Pick-ups are during normal business hours.

What happens to materials after they are donated?

Once donations are received at the Friend's workroom, the donations are counted and sorted. The sorted materials are given to the librarians for their review; the librarians decide which materials will be added to the Library collection, and which will be given to the Friend's bookstore. The materials given to the bookstore will be sold to help raise funds for the Library. The books that are added to the collection are either replacements for missing books or books needed to expand the Library's collection.
