Eleftheria Kotzia

Eleftheria Kotzia was born in Greece and studied the guitar in Athens, Paris and London, where she is now based. Miss Kotzia gives regular performances around the United Kingdom and Europe, and has given concerts in North Africa, Canada, the USA, Australia and the Far East.

She records extensively for the BBC and other radio and TV networks in Europe. She has performed at many of the greatest international guitar festivals, including the 10th Anniversary Series of the D'Addario Foundation in the USA as well as the Festival Estival in Paris, the Dromena Festival in Athens, the Norfolk and Norwich Festivals, the Linares, Spain Segovia celebrations, and in the GFA Festival, USA.

Until recently, guitar music has been almost exclusively associated with images of Spain and South America. Now, however, the rich Greek heritage has captured the imagination of many contemporary composers, and a number of their works have been dedicated to Eleftheria Kotzia. John Tavener is currently writing a guitar concerto for her to perform during the 1995/6 season, and he has revised and adapted "Chant" - his only work for solo guitar - especially for her. Miss Kotzia's debut recording, "The Blue Guitar", issued on the Pearl label, was hailed as Critics' Choice Recording of the Year" in Gramophone Magazine . "Mediterraneo", her second recording, was released earlier this year.

Eleftheria Kotzia has received outstanding reviews:

"She is in love with both her instrument and its music" Gramophone, June 1989.

"Her playing has a quality and vitality which are quite unique" Guitar International

"Verve and vivacity...warmth and intensity...a fine artist whose platform manner is thoroughly delightful, and as a player she goes from strength to strength" Classical Guitar , December 1990.
