Carulli, Ferdinando
(1770-1841)

He was born in Naples and died in Paris. The Son of a distinguished literator, secretary to the delegate of the Neapolitan Jurisdiction, he became one of the most famous of guitar virtuosi, composer and musical author. Like Aguado, his first musical instruction was from a priest and his chosen instrument was the violoncello. However, his attention was attracted by the guitar, and abandoning the cello, he devoted his life to the exclusive study and advancement of the guitar. After establishing his reputation on the guitar he began to experiment with changes in guitar construction. With Lacote, the Parisian guitar maker, he made some significant changes for improving the sound of the guitar.
