Business and Economics Statistics
The following Web sites provide useful data for business, marketing and economics research. Stat-USA, USA Trade Online, and RAND California are subscription
databases, available to current CSUN students, faculty and staff from both on- and off- campus, or to any member of the community from the Library.
The other Web sites and online guides listed below are freely accessible on the Internet.
Subscription databases
Stat-USA (U. S. Department of Commerce)
State of the Nation, part of Stat-USA, includes:
- U.S. economic indicators such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), productivity, earnings, etc.
- Housing and construction statistics
- Employment/unemployment statistics
- Manufacturing and Industry statistics
- Monetary statistics (Bank credit, foreign exchange rates, interest rates)
- U.S. economic policy releases
USA Trade Online
U.S. import and export trade statistics, 1997-present, with commodities data available to the 10-digit level. Standard report plus trade by commodity, commodity market ranking, commodity profile, country by commodity--with time series, partner country, and U.S. Custom Port Area options.
RAND California
Statistics on California with some databases including U.S. and other states. Includes business, population, education, health and other subjects in its over 80 databases. Business and economics topics include:
- Labor Force Statistics for California (employment/unemployment, wages, occupational projections, employment by industry)
- Construction and Real Estate (prices, foreclosures, construction, non-residential vacancy statistics)

- Counting California (California Digital Library) includes data (or downloadable files) on California at the state, region, county, and city level from a variety of government sources.

- State & County QuickFacts (Census Bureau)
- State of the Cities Data Systems (SOCDS) Provides demographic, economic, business, labor and other data for individual Metropolitan Areas, Central Cities, and Suburbs.
- State Statistical Abstracts
- Statistical Abstract of the United States Most consider this title easier to use in print format, which is available in the Oviatt Library Reference Room (ref HA 202). The internet offers .pdf files (use Adobe Acrobat reader). CD-ROM versions at the CSUN Library Government Documents Standalone Workstation are .pdf format but also include spreadsheet format (Excel and Lotus 1-2-3) for over 1500 of the tables. The spreadsheet version of the tables may offer more years of data or geographic locations.
