Library Resources for MUS 491: Psychology of Music

Library Catalog

You can find books, videos/DVDs, periodicals, and sound recordings in the catalog. You can do a keyword search from the Library's homepage.

If you want to find other titles like this one, you can click on an individual subject heading, such as Music Therapy or Music--Physiological Aspects. You can also create a citation by clicking on Cite This Title (choose the APA style from the list).

This particular title is checked out (you can tell because there is a due date instead of "in library." You can place a hold on any item that is checked out and the patron must immediately return it to the library. To place a hold, click on this button:

Most music therapy books are in Music & Media, but some titles are in the core of the 2nd floor with education titles, or in the core of the 3rd floor with medical/nursing titles. Bound journals are on the 4th floor and materials for educators are in the Teacher Curriculum Center (TCC) in the garden level of the library.

To find out if the library has a particular journal or magazine, you can search by title and limit to periodicals/serials using the search box on the Library homepage.

atlantic monthly electronic

The first title will show you where to find the print version. To access this journal electronically, choose the fourth or fifth record:

Then choose the database that includes the year that you need. In this example, you would only choose General OneFile if you needed an article from 1983 to 1988.

Databases

Many of the Library's databases have good resources for music therapy research. For more information, see the recommended databases for Music and Psychology.

Here is a sample list of results (search on music therapy and eating disorders) from EBSCOHost, which includes PsycInfo, PsycArticles, ERIC, and other useful databases. Some records will have full text and others will have only the abstract. You can set limits on the left and right columns of the screen based on subjects and dates.

International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP) has full-text articles from the Journal of Music Therapy and other related titles. Here is a sample search on trauma and music therapy:
trauma and music therapy

From the list of results you can view the full text of individual articles or set further parameters on the right side of the screen.

Citing your sources

You need to use APA style for citing sources in your research paper. Sometimes you can email yourself a citation from a database (from EBSCOhost, for example), but the library has guides to help you.

Citing Your Sources gives guidance, including an APA Style Guide created by Eric Garcia. This is a great resource if you are unsure of formatting.

Please contact Lindsay Hansen if you need help with your research or have any questions.
