Use the Library Catalog to find books on a topic within religious studies. If you don't know a specific title, then start with a KEYWORD search. The following are some selected suggested keywords you may choose to search under:

the present day. It contains concise, encyclopedic entries arranged in alphabetical
order.

2000.
Includes significant documents, a list of "Black Firsts," essays on history,
art, film, the military, and organizations.

1993
A six volume set on the subject of African American life, contains bibliographies
and essays on variety of topics.

Chronology of African-American History: Significant Events and People
from 1619 to the Present

Entries are arranged chronologically by year and then by month and day and
include important births and deaths, thumbnail biographies, rebellions, demonstrations,
elections, and awards.
Dictionary of Afro-American Slavery Location Reference Room E441.
D53 1997.
This is the most comprehensive work of it's kind, including a chronology and
articles on events, people, laws, and subjects related to slavery in the US.
References to the best published sources on each subject are appended.
Encyclopedia of African-American Civil Rights : from emancipation to
the present.

Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History
Location Reference Room E185. E54 1996. This 5 volume set covers all aspects
of the African American experience. It contains biographic essays, entries
on events, legal cases, areas of cultural achievement (music, architecture,
the visual arts), professions, sports, and places.
Encyclopedia of African American Religions. Location Reference Room
BR563 .N4E53 1993.
This work covers African American religious leaders and groups, and major
issues raised by the development of African American religious life. Contains
a chronology and a directory.

Finding Journals
To see if CSUN owns a journal, Please check both of the following:
- Library Catalog Periodical Title Search. To search for electronic periodicals only, check the "Search electronic periodicals only" checkbox.
To assist you in finding the journal articles, the CSUN list of Electronic
Periodicals and bibliographic databases offer 
links. Periodical databases now provide full
text access possibilities where the database is limited to citation or abstract.
If CSUN does not own the journal title you need, you may request articles using the Interlibrary Loan service at http://illiad.csun.edu/illiad/login/login.asp.

- Index to scholarly literature on world history. It provides access to over 500,000 articles, books and disserations concerning the period from 1450 to the present day
- Ethnic News Watch
- Full-text database of selected newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press in the United States. Alternative to mainstream media so gives a different perspective (not scholarly publications)
- Expanded Academic ASAP (InfoTrac)
- Full-text and citations from journals and magazines, may limit to only search full-text, within a specific date range and refereed journals
- GenderWatch
- Publications that focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subject areas.
- Human Relations Area Files
- Data and publications on a variety of cultures world-wide.

- JStor Journal Storage Project
- Archival collection of scholarly articles from various academic displines, including JSTOR African American Studies and JSTOR African, the most recent articles are at least 2-5 years old.
- MLA International Bibliography
- Indexes 4000 journals and series in literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore, 1963-
- Project Muse
- A full-text resource of journal articles. It includes 167 full-text titles of scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and mathematics from over 20 not-for-profit scholarly presses.
Using Metasearch to Find Pan African Studies Databases and Resources
A starter list of recommended databases and resources for Religious Studies can be found in MetaSearch. The category Pan African can be found in two (2) areas:MetaSearch and Find Database. Remember you will be able to customize MetaSearch, create your own lists of useful databases, electronic journals as well as save search strategies, create search alerts,and save retrieved records, but only when you Logon to Oviatt Library's MetaSearch with your 14 digit Barcode, which you had activated at the Library's Circulation Desk. Your 14 digit barcode is on your CSUN picture ID card. Logon also asks for your Last Name.
- If you want to search several databases simultaneously, select the MetaSearch link next to My Space. A list of categories will appear. Use the pull down menu under 2.Category choose Pan African Studies and find several searchable databases. You may select and search up to ten (10) databases simultaneously: Not all databases can be searched uisng the MetaSearch interface. Searching within the native interface of each databases offers more search refinements and access to the databases controlled vocabulary when available.
- A longer list of databases is available by selecting Find Database under Category scroll down to select Pan African Studies , select All and click on GO. The following databases can be searched one at a time. Those that offer the spyglass, can be searched in simple MetaSearch simple interface, all databases link to the native interface.

the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7
million digital items from more than 100 historical collections.

The African-American Migration Experience
Black Studies from the City College of New York Libraries
The Universal Black Pages. The main purpose of the UBP is to have a complete and comprehensive listing of African Diaspora related Web pages at a central site.
African American Perspectives Pamphlets Page from the Library of Congress. The Daniel A. P. Murray Pamphlet Collection presents a panoramic and eclectic review of African-American history and culture, spanning almost one hundred years from the early nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries, with the bulk of the material published between 1875 and 1900. Among the authors represented are Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Ida B. Wells.
Five Views: An Ethnic Historic Site Survey of California (National Park Service)
W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research the nation's oldest research center dedicated to the study of the history, culture, and social institutions of African Americans. Founded in 1975, the Institute serves as the site for research projects, fellowships for emerging and established scholars, publications, conferences, and Working Groups.
Statistical Information
Black Americans: A Statistical Sourcebook (Green Library Information Center Statistics Shelf E185.5 B512) provides an extensive collection of tables which display information on a wide variety of topics: population, education, health, crime, government, employment, and income are some of them.
The Black Population in the United States These tables present data on the demographic, social, and economic characteristics of the Black population in the United States from the Current Population Survey (CPS). Topics covered include geographic distribution, marital status, educational attainment, family and household type, labor force status, occupational distribution, earnings, family income, and poverty status. Also also look at the Census's Facts on the Black/African American Population.
Statistical Abstract of the United States (Green Library Information Center Statistics Shelf HA202 .A483) provides a wealth of statistical information from a variety of government and non-governmental sources.
Statistical Record of Black America (Stacks E185.86 .S74) tables and figures from both public and private sources.
We the People: An Atlas of America's Ethnic Diversity (Green Library Information Center E184 .A1 A479 1988 f) surveys people from Africa as well as the Caribbean. Excellent demographic maps.
Dissertations/Theses Research
CSUN theses accepted by the department of Pan African Studies are indexed by author, title, and the subject "Dissertations, Academic -- CSUN -- Pan-African Studies". In the Library catalog all CSUN Pan African Studies theses have the basic E185 .Z95 [Year]
- Dissertations Abstracts International. A: The Humanities and Social Sciences Ann Arbor: University Microfilms, 1938 - (REF Z 5055 U5 A53).
- DAI provides indexing to doctoral dissertations accepted by over 500 institutions participating in its microfilming program . Citations date from 1861 forward, author, title, abstract key word, and institutional searching is provided. DAI may be searched at any of the library Internet terminals (or from remote locations by connecting to First Search 2 and choosing "DISS". The online product provides abstracts only from 1980 forward. Printed counterpart former to 1995 are available.
