The goals of today's library session are:
- Learn How to do Library and Internet research: determine information need, choose best resources, develop a search strategy, understand keyword and subject searching, how to use boolean operators and truncation symbols, how to cite sources, and more.
- Use the Find Articles and Research Data to select Health Sciences Information Sources --you will eventually using most of the databases recommended, but CINAHLplus
with Full Text is your professional databases and first choice to learn.
It is sometimes worthwhile to find the same record in both CINAHLplus and PubMed and/or MEDLINE (ISI)--you might note the different subject headings assigned, but also note that the CINAHLPlus record captures the article's list of references which is NOT a feature PubMed offers.
- The library provides Health Sciences Multisearch - Multisearch offers the ability to search up to ten databases simultaneously and to save your records on your own electronic shelf access using your same CSUN email login and password. Also searching the individual databases is highly recommended .
- CINAHLPlus with FullText (EbscoHost) - CINAHLPlus with Full Text (Nursing and Allied Health Literature) on EbscoHost offers CINAHL Headings (controlled vocabulary), limits, Evidence Based Care sheets and Cited Reference searching. Remember not all the records have the full text so you will need to use sometimes the Find text icon
which helps you identify if CSUN subscribes to the journal as well as gives help in APA style. 
Be careful when applying limits prematurely. The Peer reviewed limit is most helpful.
- PubMed - in addition to indexing almost 5000 medical journals, there are links into freely availble Consumer Health (MedlinePlus) resources, several genetic, chemical, full text jurnal and full text book resources. Be sure to use CSUN's link to PubMed which is http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?otool=cacsunlib This URL offers you the Find text icon
which helps you identify if CSUN subscribes to the journal. - Cochrane(Wiley) -evidence base medical and nursing reviews. The abstracts are readily avialable but our subscription to the full review is limited to 1 simultaneous user. So try again if you cannot retrieve the pdf full article.
Learn how to use the Library Catalog to identify books and journals Oviatt LIBRARY own, in print and online. You also access items your professor has put on reserve.
Note the subject headings assigned in the catalog record for additonal hints . NOTE: The link to WorldCat in top right corner is useful to identify other libraries who own the book, and WorldCat also offers help with its Cite This for APA style . WorldCat is freely availabe at http://www.worldcat.org
