Locating Periodicals

To locate periodicals in the Oviatt Library and/or access available online journals both on- and off-campus, you have several choices:

• While searching a database, click on the link to full text (HTML or PDF) or check library holdings;
• While searching a database, click the Find Text button to display a menu with links to either full text or the location within the Library for the print version of the periodical;
• Search the periodical title in the Library Catalog; and also
• Search the periodical title in the CSUN List of Electronic Periodicals.

If the Library does not have a journal, you can request an Interlibrary Loan for the article(s) that you need. However, you must allow about two weeks for this!

Periodical Indexes/Databases

• Periodicals (magazines, newspapers, trade publications, and scholarly journals) are excellent sources of current and/or specific information for research projects.

• It's a good idea to formulate a search strategy before using a periodical database.

• The following databases use Boolean Logic (AND, OR, NOT) and truncation/wildcards symbols (*, ?, etc.) for combining keywords and phrases to locate articles on specific topics.

• FYI, you can also connect to the Library's databases and full-text periodicals from off campus

• General/Multi-Subject Databases

• News & Current Issues
• Multisearch is a link under each Subject, and will allow you to search several databases simultaneously. You can save records you find using the same login you use for CSUN email.
• Thompson Gale PowerSearch is a very large database covering all disciplines which helps you identify scholarly articles, includes encyclopedia articles, and tools to help you cite your references.
