The goals of the library sessions are:

• Learn How to do Library and Internet research: determine information need, choose best resources, develop a search strategy, understand keyword and subject searching, how to use boolean operators and truncation  symbols, how to cite sources, and more. Learn how to identify scholarly articles.
• Learn how to use the Library Catalog and the CSUN List of Electronic Journals to find books and journals on your topic.  Following is an example of a catalog record for an online journal
• Learn how to use Find Articles and Research Data at http://library.csun.edu/xerxes
  • Articles and Research Data : Health Sciences at http://library.csun.edu/xerxes/databases/HealthSciences offers several databases helpful to you while you are registered student at CSUN are: CINAHLPlus with full text, Cochrane Evidence based reviews, Heatlh Reference Center Academic.
  • Learn how to use PubMed, an open access database available after you graduate - PubMed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?otool=cacsunlib offers the Find Text link which helps you identify if CSUN owns a journal
    • setup your own NCBI free account to store records and search strategies
    • learn about MeSH subject headings and subheadings
    • explore other links from PubMed-Consume Health offers MedlinePlus
    • Tutorials to show you how to search Pubmed
• Learn about Health Sciences Multisearch
• Search up to ten (10) databases at a times. You can clear and select the databases you want to search
• Save records in your very own electronic folder if you login with same login you use with your CSUN email.

• Learn about the link most of our databases offer.
• Register for CSUN's Interlibrary Loan for items our library does NOT have.
• Learn how to get help to Cite Sources

  Style guides

  Why cite? 

  Help is available for APA style in the EbscoHost, Thomson Gale Infotrac, Proquest, CSA databases as well as on the Find Text menus. In Find text remember to click on More Options -Click Save Citation Information, and use pull down menu to select APA, click go. Copy and paste the APA style for the record you were viewing.
