This web page lists resources in early childhood education (ECE), care, and development for young children from birth to appoximately age 5. The following resources may be of use to students in the departments of Child and Adolescent Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Educational Psychology and Counseling, Special Education, and Psychology.

Web Sites

American Educational Research Association (AERA) is an organization dedicated to improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation.   AERA promotes the dissemination and practical application of research results.

California State Department of Education provides information and resources related to the California public school system including content standards, curriculum frameworks, and statistics.

Center for the Study of Child Care Employment at UC-Berkeley has released two reports freely available in PDF: Time to Revamp and Expand: Early Childhood Teacher Preparation Programs in California's Institutions of Higher Education (57 pages) and Establishing Teacher Competencies in Early Care and Education: A Review of Current Models and Options for California (19 pages)

Child Care and Early Education Research Connections is an index to literature about children birth through age 8 and--when addressing school-age child care--through age 13. Content includes the child care and early education workforce, parents and families, service settings, and early learning policies. Good source for statistics. Some full-text documents, but if not available, check the Library's catalog.

Children Now is a national organization for people who care about children and want to ensure that they are the top public policy priority.

FPG Child Development Institute, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also focuses on children from birth through age 8. It publishes technical assistance materials on topics such as quality child care, personnel preparation, parent leadership, transitions, and inclusion. Many documents are available free online in PDF format.

High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, headquartered in Michigan, promotes active participatory learning. It conducts research, publishes books, offers professional conferences and trainings, and develops curricula including: infant-toddler, preschool, early literacy, and movement and music.

Maternal and Child Health Library, from Georgetown Univerisity, is a virtual guide to MCH information. It publishes a weekly newsletter, resource guides, full text publications, databases, bibliographies, and links to quality web sites. Lots of information on topics of interest to early childhood educators.

NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) promotes educational services for children from birth through age 8. NAEYC administers a prestigious accreditation system for preschools, kindergartens, and child care centers. Good source of information on critical issues, research and reports, etc. A web page Links to National Early Childhood Organizations lists hundreds of national organizations with early childhood related resources.

NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development is a comprehensive child care study conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to determine how variations in child care are related to children's development.

Office of Head Start (a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) - Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families.

Society for Research in Child Development is a multidisciplinary, not-for-profit, professional association with a membership comprised of researchers, practitioners, and human development professionals from over 50 countries.  The purposes of the Society are to promote multidisciplinary research in the field of human development, to foster the exchange of information among scientists and other professionals of various disciplines, and to encourage applications of research findings.

Waldorf Institute of Southern California has a location right here in Northridge. Developed by Rudolf Steiner, Waldorf education uses a holistic model of child development that includes creative as well as analytic thought. Waldorf schools aim to "educate the whole child--head, heart, and hands", with an ECE emphasis on learning through doing. See also Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America.

ZERO TO THREE aims to educate and support adults who influence the lives of infants and toddlers. It is headquartered in Washington, DC, with a regional office in Los Angeles. Publications include the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood (DC:0-3R), revised in 2005—the first developmentally based system for diagnosing mental health and developmental disorders in infants and toddlers.
