Program: Basic Subject Cataloging Using LCSH is designed to give attendees a solid foundation in the principles and practices of subject cataloging using LCSH, an introduction to the most important tools, and practice in formulating heading strings using subdivisions. Many topics were deliberately left out of the curriculum in order to cover the basics without overwhelming attendees and to allow time for active participation through exercises. Designed as a two-day course, the curriculum includes 15 sessions including the following:
Prepared through an initiative by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) and the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS).
Adam is Principal Cataloger, University of Washington Libraries. Adam serves as the UW Libraries' NACO, SACO, and BIBCO coordinator and is the author of the SACO Participants' Manual (Library of Congress, Cataloging Distribution Service, 2001). Adam was a member of the joint ALCTS/PCC task group that developed the "Basic Subject Cataloging Using LCSH" workshop and is also a instructor for the SCCTP Integrating Resources Cataloging workshop and a trainer for NACO. He was a member and then chair of the ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA), and is currently chair of the ALCTS/LITA/RUSA MARBI Committee. Adam has an A.B. in biological sciences from Cornell University and an M.L.I.S. from UC Berkeley.
Steve is the Serials Access Librarian at the University of Washington Libraries (his alma mater) where he coordinates electronic serial access and catalogs serials in all formats. His primary area of professional interest is in the application of traditional cataloging methods and standards (including AACR2) to electronic and non-print format serials. In this area, his primary accomplishment has been the development of a one-day Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop for the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP). His articles have appeared in Serials Librarian, Serials Review and the Journal of Internet Cataloging and he regularly speaks at ALA and NASIG annual meetings. His prior experience includes working as an ISSN cataloger at the National Serials Data Program of the Library of Congress and as Technical Services Librarian at the Agency for International Development Library. On a personal note, Steve is a Disney fan and is very pleased to have been invited to speak in southern California.
