Information Competence
MEMORANDUM
Office of the Dean, University Library
California State University, Northridge
DATE: October 15, 1998
TO: The Commission on Learning Resources and Instructional Technology
FROM: Susan C. Curzon
Chair, Information Competence Work Group
SUBJECT: Interim Report of October 23, 1998
The Information Competence Work Group is pleased to inform you
of the progress of its activities:
- Grants
Eighteen campuses now have an information competence initiative underway.
Over the last three years, $220,499 in grant funds was distributed to the
campuses. The grants reflect a variety of approaches to information
competence. Working in various disciplines, faculty have created
web-based tutorials, model information competence lists, complete courses,
assessment techniques and tools, entrance and exit requirements, handbooks
and first year experience modules. Additionally, linkage was made
with many high schools and community colleges. The diversity and number
of grants has gone a long way to achieving our goal of encouraging information
competence programs in the CSU.
- 1998-99 Proposals
The 1998-99 Information Competence Call for Proposals was sent from
President Wilsons office to all campus presidents on October 15th.
The proposals are due November 23rd. Review of the proposals will
occur on December 3rd with notification shortly thereafter.
- Special Recognition
We are particularly proud to inform you that our information competence
project at San Luis Obispo, under the direction of Paul Adalian, has been
selected as the first of the nations top ten tutorials by the Association
of College and Research Libraries.
- Summer Workshops
Committee work is underway to create summer faculty development workshops
on information competence. At this point, our intent would be to
provide two three-day workshops attended by a total of 40 faculty. Faculty
would be expected to apply with definite projects in mind.
- Fellowships
The Work Group is considering offering five summer fellowships to
faculty. The fellowships would be focused on developing information
competence for distance learning, for teacher preparation and for K-12
teaching effectiveness. Fellows would also be expected to attend the workshops.
- Assessment
The Work Group is discussing a larger assessment project to provide
CLRIT with an analysis of the level of student knowledge of information
competence.
