Subject: changes at the Oviatt

I wanted to take a moment to update you on some of the changes that are being planned for the Oviatt Library.

We are very busy gearing up for a renovation project that will align the Oviatt with current trends in academic libraries by transforming our space from a book-centered to a learning-centered environment.  During Phase One of the project we will build a “Learning Commons” that will be located on the first floor of the Oviatt.  While construction will probably not begin until 2013, we are already planning to create a place that will blend a variety of types of learning spaces to accommodate a wide range of learning styles. The dynamic atmosphere of the Learning Commons, complete with coffee shop, will be student-centered and highly supportive of collaborative and group learning.  We will of course also retain many quiet study spaces throughout the Library for the students who desire and need this type of atmosphere.

In conjunction with the Learning Commons, as we work to stay abreast of the evolution of how students study and learn in a library environment, we will have more to offer in the way of resources.  We will provide more electronic resources and library-oriented digital learning objects, more laptop checkouts to students, and a pilot program for loaning tablet computers.  In addition, we will continue to create more programmatic partnerships with other departments and build upon our successful instructional programming to improve students’ information literacy.

We in the Oviatt Library have been working with Academic Affairs and Facilities Planning on this project, and keeping the Faculty Senate Library Committee informed of our plans.  We have also reached out and received back some great feedback from students and other important stakeholders. As we begin the task of evaluating where to store some of our print resources, I have asked Lynn Lampert (chair of the Reference and Instructional Services department) to contact you and your faculty in the coming weeks to get your input on how we might best reshape our print reference collection. We at CSUN are fortunate in that we are one of the few libraries to have an ASRS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System), so we can move some of our books to storage but still retrieve them for our students and faculty in less than five minutes.
