{"id":3339,"date":"2015-09-14T18:01:50","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T18:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.csun.edu\/blogs\/cited\/?p=3339"},"modified":"2015-09-14T18:01:50","modified_gmt":"2015-09-14T18:01:50","slug":"find-out-about-magazines-and-journals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.csun.edu\/blogs\/cited\/2015\/09\/14\/find-out-about-magazines-and-journals\/","title":{"rendered":"Find Out About Magazines and Journals!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/library.csun.edu\/blogs\/cited\/files\/2015\/09\/Magazine-vs-Journal-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3351 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/library.csun.edu\/blogs\/cited\/files\/2015\/09\/Magazine-vs-Journal-2.png\" alt=\"Magazine vs Journal\" width=\"788\" height=\"1967\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Magazines vs. Journals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Popular Sources = magazines and newspaper articles<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purpose: Inform and entertain the general reader<\/li>\n<li>Authors: journalist or professional writers (usually employees of the publication)<\/li>\n<li>Audience: general public<\/li>\n<li>Coverage: Broad variety of public interest topics, cross disciplinary.<\/li>\n<li>Publisher: Commercial<\/li>\n<li>Characteristics:\n<ul>\n<li>Few or no cited references<\/li>\n<li>General summaries of background information<\/li>\n<li>Contain advertisements<\/li>\n<li>Length of articles are usually brief, 1-5 pages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Frequency: Published on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.<\/li>\n<li>Examples: <em>Time, Newsweek, Vogue, National Geographic, The New Yorker<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Scholarly Sources = journal articles<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purpose: To communicate research and scholarly ideas<\/li>\n<li>Authors: researchers, scholars, or faculty (usually listed with their institution affiliation)<\/li>\n<li>Audience: other scholars, students<\/li>\n<li>Coverage: Very narrow and specific topics<\/li>\n<li>Publisher: Professional associations, academic institutions, and many commercial publishers.<\/li>\n<li>Characteristics:\n<ul>\n<li>Includes full citations for sources<\/li>\n<li>Uses scholarly or technical language<\/li>\n<li>Peer reviewed<\/li>\n<li>Length of articles are longer, over 5 pages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Frequency: Published on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis<\/li>\n<li>Examples: Journal of Politics, Sociological Review, Journal of Marriage and Family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Things to keep in mind:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can find both types of sources using the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.calstate.edu\/northridge\/databases\">Oviatt Library\u2019s Databases.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Book reviews and editorials found in journals are not considered scholarly articles.<\/li>\n<li>Both magazines and journal articles can be good sources for your work.<\/li>\n<li>Often a combination of the two will be the most appropriate for undergraduate research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a title=\"Jamie Johnson\" href=\"http:\/\/library.csun.edu\/jjohnson\">&#8211;
