Chicana Transfronteriza: Scholar-Activist Genealogies and Academic Disruptions
Dr. Michelle Téllez, an Assistant Professor in the department of Mexican American Studies at the University of Arizona, has been committed to mapping projects of resistance, exploring shared human experiences and advancing social justice for the last 25-years. Having been raised along the U.S./Mexico border divide, both her scholarly and community engaged work has been deeply shaped by this experience. She writes about transnational community formations (and disruptions), Chicana mothering, and gendered migration in several book anthologies, and in journals such as: Gender & Society, Feminist Formations, and Aztlán. She has also written for Truth Out, The Feminist Wire, and Latino Rebels.
A founding member of the Chicana M(other) work collective, Dr. Téllez has been involved in multiple projects for change at the grassroots level, including community-based arts and performance. Dr. Téllez is on the editorial review board for Chicana/Latina Studies, the executive board of directors for the Southwest Folklife Alliance and is the Faculty Fellow for the Chicanx student center on campus. The recipient of various awards and fellowships, she is a 2018 Public Voices Fellow for the Op Ed Project.

Queer Lens in Focus
The research interest and passions of Professor Capous-Desyllas involve the use of arts-based research methodologies as a form of activism for social justice and as a way to highlight the voices of marginalized individuals, groups and communities. Interdisciplinary perspectives from social work, social psychology and sociology intersect to shape an interest in: critical pedagogies, transnational issues, empowerment, social justice and diversity, anti-oppressive research and practice methods, feminist and queer theory, visual sociology, community engagement, and social activism through the arts.
