University Library E-News: Thanks & Recognition

Virginia Elwood-Akers

Thanks & Recognition: Virginia Elwood-Akers

Summer 2015

Kindhearted, talented, and outspoken Librarian Emeritus Virginia Elwood-Akers has always had plenty to say and much to give. For that, and so much more, we would like to convey our heartfelt gratitude.

Kris Ecklund

Thanks & Recognition: Kris Ecklund

Spring 2015

After 37 years of dedicated service to California State University, Northridge and the Oviatt Library, retired Librarian Kris Ecklund continues to support the impactful work and inspiring legacy of CSUN librarians.  These days, CSUN Emeritus Librarian Kris Ecklund lives far away from the San Fernando Valley. Her current house sits on a hill in Sequim, a small city perched on a bay in Northern Washington State just across the water from Canada. Even with all those miles between the Oviatt Library and her current home, Ecklund has never forgotten the place where she spent more than thirty years doing the work that she loved so much.

Faculty and Staff at our Holiday Party

Thanks and Recognition: For a Long Tradition of Holiday Giving

Winter 2014

Library staff and faculty go above and beyond to incorporate both an imaginative theme and the spirit of giving into their annual holiday celebration. At this year’s unique event, contributions were gathered for Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission.

The Oviatt Library's Pillars

Thanks and Recognition: Faculty Senate Library Committee

Fall 2014

We would like to take a moment to honor and appreciate the ongoing and often unsung work that the members of Faculty Senate Library Committee perform on behalf of our entire CSUN community.

November 2013 marked a milestone in the open access movement as CSUN became the very first of the 23 Cal State University campuses to adopt an official open access resolution for its faculty.

Vern Bullough

Thanks & Recognition: Vern Bullough

Summer 2014

It was a lucky day for our library when Vern Bullough, a young history professor from Utah, joined the faculty of what was then San Fernando Valley State College in 1959. Vern Bullough and his wife Bonnie met in high school in Salt Lake City, Utah, and were married barely out of their teens. The Bulloughs were together for nearly 50 years and had four children.

Friends of the Oviatt Library Bookstore

Thanks & Recognition: Friends of the Oviatt Library

Spring 2014

By the end of March, the Friends of the Library bookstore will be closing its doors. Thankfully, however, when these doors close an entire portico will open.

The Friends of the Library Bookstore, located in the west wing on the first floor of the Oviatt, will be closing on March 28, 2014, to make way for the continuing transformation of the Library’s main level. Since first opening its doors in September of 2000, the bookstore has generated thousands of dollars from the sale of used books.

Dean Mark Stover and Chinese Consulate Jian Liu

Thanks & Recognition: Chinese Consulate

Winter 2013

A generous gift of learning resources from the Chinese Consulate to the Oviatt Library is reflective of a well-established partnership that exemplifies CSUN’s expanding role in the internationalization of higher education. Last summer Professor Justine Su, Director of CSUN’s China Institute, helped to facilitate the donation of more than 2,000 textbooks, CDs, DVDs, and various other interactive learning materials to the Oviatt Library.

Fall 2013

Associate Dean of the Oviatt Library Marianne Afifi is required to wear a variety of hats. Now, after overseeing months of construction in the new Learning Commons, a hardhat is included. On the long list of responsibilities that fall under the purview of the Oviatt Library’s Associate Dean Marianne Afifi are things like day-to-day operations, emergency planning, departmental oversight, strategic planning, and development.

Ann and Dave Perkins

Thanks and Recognition: Ann and Dave Perkins

Summer 2013

Even though retired librarians Ann and Dave Perkins recently relocated away from their long-time Northridge home, their continuing support of Library scholarships and their ongoing service to the campus as emeritus faculty keeps them closely tied to CSUN and the Oviatt.

Bob Gohstand and Maureen Kelly

Thanks and Recognition: Bob Gohstand and Maureen Kelly

Spring 2013

The newly named and soon to be remodeled Robert Gohstand and Maureen Kelly Reading Room will offer a quiet, comfortable oasis for avid readers; it will also serve as a dynamic and enduring reminder of the many gifts bestowed on the Oviatt Library by two of its most passionate supporters and most cherished friends.
