At the very heart of campus life stands the University Library—a mecca of knowledge, innovation, and collaboration. Beyond being an intellectual cornerstone at CSUN, it also serves as one of the largest on-campus employers, providing meaningful opportunities for nearly 100 student assistants each year. These students don’t just work behind the scenes—they are integral to the University Library's daily operations, from helping patrons to coordinating key resources for the academic community.

Each spring, the Library celebrates its hardworking student employees through its highly anticipated Student Employee Scholarship Program. This cherished event honors students’ dedication, resilience, and drive to achieve their scholastic and personal goals. It’s no surprise that this annual ceremony is one of the most heartfelt celebrations among Library supporters, where guests are thoroughly inspired and beaming with pride.

In the most recent celebration, 24 deserving students were recognized for their outstanding achievements, receiving scholarships that support their academic and professional journeys. The program is a testament to the Library's commitment to nurturing not just academic excellence, but also personal and professional growth.

Student employees in the Library enjoy the benefits of a flexible work schedule and a professional environment among supportive, friendly staff and faculty. The Scholarship Program is the icing on the cake, as an added bonus for those who take advantage of the opportunity.

Providing customer service with a smile and genuine enthusiasm at the Library Administration reception desk, Luz Lopez Sibrian is a graduate student fulfilling her mission to become a Speech and Language Pathologist. She earned her BA in Communicative Disorders from CSUN in 2023 with a spot on the Dean’s List every semester. Outside of CSUN, Luz found fulfillment and purpose working as a caregiver, where she discovered a profound sense of compassion and empathy within herself. Luz’s academic excellence earned two awards, the Mary Flenniken Memorial Scholarship and the Mary & James Cleary Endowment Scholarship.

In a touching note of gratitude, Luz shared, “I am deeply passionate about making a difference in the lives of others, particularly through my aspirations to become a Speech and Language Pathologist. Whether working in a school or medical setting, I am committed to helping individuals overcome communication barriers. Your generous support will enable me to pursue my academic goals without the added stress of financial worries, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and gain practical experience in my field. I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I promise to make the most of it by dedicating myself wholeheartedly to my education and future career. Your belief in my potential means the world to me, and I am determined to honor your generosity by paying it forward and making a positive impact in the lives of others.”

The 2024 scholarship reception was the last one hosted by Mark Stover, who retired from his Library dean role in August. He shared candid admiration and gratitude, stating this was his favorite Library event of the year. The sentiment was shared from table to table among donors and employees, alike.

It’s your turn now to get a glimpse of this joyous event and celebrate the hardworking student employee scholarship recipients in this slide show captured by the Library’s very own Tim Bochen.
