How does confirmation bias affect our view of the world? How does motivated reasoning shape the way we interpret and respond to evidence presented in news and opinion pieces? Join us to explore proven strategies to counter our biases when surfing online or conducting research and then practice using these strategies to investigate a real-life issue. CSUN campus community is invited.
Guest speaker Jessi Hollis McCarthy of the Freedom Forum Institute will explore strategies to counter biases when surfing online or conducting research.
Jessi Hollis McCarthy is the head of the educational initiatives at NewseumED/Freedom Forum. Her work focuses on expanding access to media literacy education by creating interactive virtual and in-person programs for students, educators, journalists, community leaders, and life-long learners. She has introduced media literacy to underserved and rural communities in the United States and across 6 continents in countries where media literacy skills are essential to disrupting propaganda and other types of disinformation. Since 2020, Jessi has taught media literacy to more than 30,000 people around the world.
