September 15, 2023 - 12:00am to October 15, 2023 - 12:00am
University Library

The University Library celebrates Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th with a Spotlight on Latina Trailblazers.

  • September 28:  Join us for an unforgettable evening with the first Latina in space, Dr. Ellen Ochoa. Dr. Ochoa has charted a dazzling and inspirational career path: from her early days as a researcher, to her four missions as an astronaut, to heading up NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Ochoa has seen first hand the importance of minorities in STEM, women in leadership positions, and the way innovative change management can push a team—an entire organization—forward.

  • October 4: Freelance journalist Minerva Canto joins us as a guest speaker at the 11th Annual Banned Books Readout: Let Freedom Read.  Canto has written editorials or the Los Angeles Times and has worked as a news columnist for Capital & Main and The Orange County Register; a staff writer for The Associated Press in Los Angeles and San Diego; and reporter for newspapers in New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. She has written about immigration, police, courts, the U.S.-Mexico border, education, public health and the arts.
