A Digital Detox: Hands-on Analog Zine Making Session with Lisa Bishop - Afternoon

This workshop is about creativity and wellness without digital devices. Lisa Bishop sets up the “why” we make zines: to inspire creativity, wellness, advocacy, knowledge sharing and so much more. Research about the health benefits of zining will also be presented. Participants will go away with a minimum of: 1 common 8-page single sheet foldable zine, a collective zine, a few copyable templates for the future, and a resource page. (All materials will be provided).

Lisa Bishop, Teacher Librarian(Ret), K-8 Bilingual Educator, Past President California School Library Association, ALA Zine Pavilion Co-organizer 2024 San Diego, Co-Organizer San Francisco Youth Social Justice Comic Con 2020 & 2022. 8 year Tabler at the SF ZineFest with her middle schoolers.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will go back in time before the digital revolution. This is a mental health nourishing detox session away from our digital devices.
- Participants will have the opportunity to view and handle a large collection of zines, learn easy zinemaking and the vocabulary to teach others.
- Participants will go away with a minimum of : 1 common 8 page single sheet foldable zine, a collective zine, a few copyable templates for the future, and a resource page. (Can make as many zines as time permits)
- Participants will learn which writing tools are fun and vital to making zines: Clip art, magazines, flair pens, typewriters…
- Participants will use easy to find bookmaking/zinemaking tools: bone folder, awl, waxed thread, needles, pvc glue for more complicated zinemaking (if there is time) and/or easy bookmaking.
- Participants will learn about using reusable resources on tight budgets for zine making.
- Participants will apply their learning in future hands-on sessions by teaching their friends, students and/or colleagues or even apply to table at the next local zine fest.
