Join the Library as we celebrate the grand opening of Special Collections & Archives 2023-2024 "Eating the Archives" exhibit with special guest speakers!
Eating the Archives explores the many ways archival representations of food and related cultural practices preserve community memories while reflecting and engaging with broader societal issues related to identity, representation, and daily lived experiences. It also explores ways of transmitting cooking knowledge, and considers contributions to American foodways. It also examines the interplay between food and issues such as politics, labor, gender, and identity. Taken together, it provides food for thought on the ways this essential part of life satiates our appetites while serving as a conduit for our culture.

- 4:05 – 4:15 pm - Welcome remarks by Mark Stover, Dean of the University Library
- 4:15 – 5:00 pm - Archives Librarian Mallory Furnier will lead a panel discussion on themes related to the exhibit.
- 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. – University Exhibit Gallery, 2nd Floor, West Wing
- Self-guided exploration of the exhibit with light refreshments
Betty is one of three children of Rosa and Raul Porto, Sr., the founding family of Porto's Bakery. Growing up, Betty helped at the Bakery after school and on weekends. She and her siblings witnessed their mother’s passion for baking and cooking firsthand, which inspired them to carry on their mother’s legacy. After graduating from college, Betty took on a more significant role within the business to honor her mother's recipes, high standards, and reflect the family mission for generations to come.
As a media historian, Dr. Giotta studies the social, cultural, and material histories of communication technology from the camera to the computer to understand how these extensions of the human sensorium have reorganized the lifeworld. She regularly teaches courses in the philosophy of technology, communication history, rhetorical criticism, and food studies, and she is active in numerous professional organizations like the Society for Cinema and Media Studies and the Western States Communication Association.
Adrienne is a food science graduate of California State University Northridge. As the granddaughter of a flavor chemist from Magnolia Ice Cream & Treats, Adrienne developed her palate & understanding of flavor theory while working as a mixologist, crafting multiple cocktail programs for SBE hospitality. She has a unique passion to globalize palates through unique, yet familiar handcrafted ice cream flavors at Wanderlust Creamery.
Jon-Patrick is a CSUN graduate, who majored in business and is an attorney turned entrepreneur. He worked for a prominent Los Angeles litigation firm before leaving the legal practice to pursue his passion in developing unique restaurant concepts.
