El Rescate Archives: A Community Welcome
Nov 2, 2025 2:00pm - 5:00pm
University Library: Jack & Florence Ferman Presentation Room and Online
Presentation and Conversation
Celebrate the opening of the El Rescate Collection to research! Reflect on over four decades defending immigrant and human rights and on the connection to current challenges.
El Rescate was founded in 1981 by Salvadoran refugees with the support of the Southern California Ecumenical Council to meet the urgent need for legal and social services for refugees fleeing the civil war. The organization donated their archival records to CSUN’s Special Collections & Archives. With support from a Mellon Foundation Grant subaward from UC Irvine’s Community-Centered Archives Practice: Transforming Education, Archives, and Community History, the El Rescate Collection will now be open to researchers in November 2025.
This event will begin with a welcome from El Rescate CEO Salvador Sanabria, followed by a short presentation from CSUN’s Special Collections & Archives on how to access the collection. After the presentations, there will be an open mic led by El Rescate community members reflecting on their historical experiences. The event will conclude with a reception with light refreshments, and a pop-up mini-exhibit of representative materials from the collection.
Aspects of the event will be in-person only, please see the event itinerary below. Note that the Zoom will NOT be recorded. If attending virtually, you must attend live.
