From Sullivan to Social Media: How Journalism, Media Literacy and the First Amendment Rise and Fall Together
Oct 22, 2026 11:30am - 12:45pm
Zoom

Discover how First Amendment freedoms empower journalism, strengthen democracy, and help citizens hold government accountable through real-world examples and a landmark Supreme Court case, and how that case and the protections and powers it advanced are being threatened.
Kevin Goldberg will provide a presentation through Zoom on the First Amendment and how the First Amendment relates to and/or protects media literacy. This is a collaboration between the Journalism department, Jour365 News Literacy class, and the University Library.
Kevin Goldberg is Vice President/First Amendment Expert at Freedom Forum, where he educates the public about all five freedoms of the First Amendment. Before that he was a media lawyer for 25 years, representing journalists and journalism organizations in matters involving defamation, access to information and intellectual property. Goldberg has taught journalism and First Amendment law, spoken to audiences around the world, and appeared as a legal expert on several news channels. He received the Radio Television News Directors Foundation’s 2026 First Amendment Award.
