What is a Learning Commons?
Within Academic Libraries a learning commons is an area that fosters the development of the twenty-first century student and scholar. This multifunctional and flexible space further integrates the library into the lives of students in collaboration with other campus departments and services. A Learning Commons integrates the new skillsets of librarians with 21st century technologies; provides students with ergonomic, portable, and flexible furniture; creates a light and open space; is food friendly; and facilitates a teaching and learning dynamic.
Where is Learning Commons located?
The Learning Commons extends throughout the 1st floor of the University Library (including the Core and both Wings).
What hours is the Library Learning Commons open?
The Library Learning Commons is open all hours that the University Library is open.
What kinds of study spaces are available?
Comfortable ergonomically-designed individual seating for reading and computing is provided. In addition, the Library Learning Commons offers group study rooms and different group seating configurations to allow for collaborative work with computing options.
Are there reference books (dictionaries, encyclopedias) available for consultation on the first floor?
Yes. The Library Learning Commons offers students, faculty and staff a collection of print resources available for browsing. In addition, our growing electronic reference resources is also searchable via online access to our growing collection.
What printing equipment is available?
Printing is available in the Library Learning Commons.
What kinds of computers are available for use in the Library Learning Commons?
The Library Learning Commons has desktop computing available for students. In addition, the Learning Commons provides students with the ability to check out both laptop and tablets.
What services are available for students with disabilities?
The Library's Assistive Technology study rooms are located in the Learning Commons main area. Please see Services for Users with Disabilities for additional resources
What kind of help can I get?
One-on-one consultation and help with informational and technological support questions needed for course projects and assignments and other research needs are fielded by both librarians and staff within the commons at the Research Consultation Desk. Staff at the Guest Services desk in the lobby are also available to provide assistance to students needing help. In addition to help at these service points, students continue to benefit from the co-curricular instructional program offered via the Reference and Instructional Services Department. The Library Learning Commons also offers new workshop programming aimed at providing students with tips and help in learning new technologies, software and approaches to conducting research at CSUN. The Reference and Instructional Services Department offers online help via tutorials and web pages.
