Featured: Unveiling the Extraordinary Commons

Newsletter Edition: Fall 2013

Although the official ribbon cutting will take place at the Grand Opening on October 3, accompanied by all of the appropriate pomp and circumstance, the beautifully reimagined first floor of CSUN’s Delmar T. Oviatt Library has been buzzing with increased excitement and activity since fall classes began.  “Response from the CSUN community has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Dean Mark Stover.  “Students, faculty, staff, and administrators have all commented on how the renovation has created a light, airy space to study and learn, how the new furniture and ceiling truly make the first floor a very different place than it was before, and how the presence of the Freudian Sip has created a more relaxed and yet at the same time a more stimulating atmosphere.”

University President Dianne F. Harrison will be on hand along with a list of other dignitaries to officially introduce students, faculty, and community patrons to the bright, open, modern lobby, complete with a beautifully redesigned guest services desk, plenty of seating, and a full-service Freudian Sip coffeehouse. Guests at the grand opening event will be offered guided tours of the vibrant and sprawling Learning Commons with its flexible work areas, enhanced study spaces, ergonomic furniture, laptop and tablet checkout, Information Technology Help Desk, and interactive digital signage. In addition to having an opportunity to experience the first floor Commons, guests also will  be encouraged to visit the Learning Resource Center (LRC) in its beautifully remodeled new home in the east wing on the third floor. “Partnerships are an important aspect of what the Library is trying to do on campus, and our collaborative efforts with the Freudian Sip, Information Technology, and the Learning Resource Center are just the start of continuing efforts in this direction,” says the dean.

The Learning Commons celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. with live music, food, opening remarks, and a ribbon cutting on the Library’s front portico, after which guests will be invited inside to explore the myriad of Learning Commons spaces, resources and services either on their own or as part of a tour.  The Learning Commons Grand Opening is free of charge, and reservations for this very special event can be made on line at http://library.csun.edu/GrandOpening. Please RSVP by September 25. For more information about the Learning Commons Grand Opening, please call (818) 677-7629. We look forward to seeing you there.
