Sharon Fogarty Young Readers' Collection

The Sharon Fogarty Young Readers' Collection is a growing and vibrant collection of fiction and non-fiction books for children and young adults. The Collection was endowed in 2002 by Sharon Fogarty's family, Patricia Fogarty and David Svoboda. Sharon was a long-time friend of the University Library and her interest in children's books grew from her habit of buying books and reading them to her nieces and nephews. Her family often commented on Sharon's joy in the quality of the writing and engaging illustrations that she found in children's books.

The primary goal of the collection is to provide supplemental reading for the "Children's Literature" and "Literature for Adolescents" courses. Just as important is the goal of reading for pleasure. The materials in the collection include classic children's literature, best sellers, poetry, plays, fact books, and reference books. Award winning titles from such literary awards as the Newbery Medal (from the American Library Association for the most distinguished contribution to American children's literature), the Caldecott Medal (from the American Library Association for the most distinguished American picture book for children), the California Young Reader Medal (a program to encourage recreational reading of popular literature), and the Coretta Scott King Awards (presented to authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream") are added annually.

The Collection is housed in the Teacher Curriculum Center, located on the second floor of the University Library and is indexed in the OneSearch. The books circulate for two-week loan periods to any borrower with a valid CSUN library card.
