Special Collections & Archives Fellowships, Scholarships, and Internships
Students can apply for fellowships, scholarships, and internships in Special Collections & Archives. Each opportunity below has different eligibility and application requirements, but all focus on use and exploration of primary and archival collection materials in Special Collections & Archives. Librarians, archivists, and other CSUN faculty evaluate applications and determine awards each year. Learn more about these opportunities in Special Collections & Archives below.
About the Croly Research Scholarship
Two $500 Croly Research Scholarships are awarded to CSUN students each year in honor of Betty Croly, a pioneering city planner and the American Planning Association's first California Chapter Historian. Students who are awarded Croly Research Scholarships can be enrolled in any course or degree program at CSUN, with a completed writing, creative, or other project that made meaningful use of the American Planning Association, California Chapter Collection. Croly Scholarship winners are selected by a committee appointed by the Dean of the Library.
Application Process
The Croly Scholarship is awarded two times each academic year. Applicants must submit:
- Application: Complete and submit the online application, including:
- A statement describing your project & a copy of the project itself;
- A description of why your use of the American Planning Association, California Chapter Collection was meaningful and important for your project.
Eligibility
Croly Scholarship winners must be CSUN students in good academic standing.
About the Gardner Research Fellowship
The Gardner Research Fellowship is a one-year student fellowship that provides a $1,500 award to a CSUN student. Student fellows may be enrolled in any course or degree program at CSUN, with an upcoming writing, creative, or other project that requires intensive research using primary sources, rare books, or unique materials found in Special Collections and Archives. Gardner Fellows are selected by a committee of library faculty and staff.
Application Process
The Gardner Fellowship is awarded once each academic year. Applicants must submit:
- Application: Complete and submit the online application, including a description of the writing, creative, or other project you will work on that does not exceed 1,000 words and includes the following:
- A statement of the purpose of your project;
- An outline of your project plan;
- A description or list of the primary sources, rare books, archives, or other unique materials in Special Collections & Archives that you will use to complete the project;
- A project timeline or schedule.
- Reference letter: One letter of reference from a member of CSUN’s faculty who will support the student’s project over the course of the fellowship. Reference letters should be sent to asksca@csun.edu.
Eligibility
The Gardner Fellow must be a CSUN student in good academic standing.
About the IGRA Fellowship
The Ronald C. & Elizabeth-ann Purcell International Guitar Research Archives (IGRA) Fellowship is a one-year student fellowship that provides a $2,000 award and a paid position as a student assistant in the Library's International Guitar Research Archives (IGRA). It is open to all full-time CSUN students interested in music, library science, music research, and/or the arts, preferably one who is enrolled in the guitar performance program. IGRA Fellows are selected by the Purcell IGRA Fellowship Endowment Committee, which includes members from the University Library and Music Department.
Application Process
The IGRA Fellowship is awarded every Fall semester. Complete application packets must include the following:
- Application: Complete and submit the online application, including:
- An essay in which you explain why you are applying for the fellowship, what your academic and career goals are, and how working in IGRA will support those goals. What skills, knowledge, or ideas do you possess that might benefit IGRA? Do not exceed 750 words.
- The University Library Student Employment Application, which should include the name of your employer(s), place of employment, duties, hours/week worked, and dates of employment for your last two jobs.
- Reference Letter: One letter of reference must be submitted on your behalf by an employer, instructor, or teacher to julieta.garcia@csun.edu.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be full-time CSUN students.
- Applicants must have at least one year left in their program of study.
- Applicants must commit to working for the Library for one academic year.
- Applicants must agree to work during IGRA's regular hours of operation.
About the Urban Studies & Planning (URBS) 494C Internship
CSUN students enrolled in URBS 494C are eligible to apply for the URBS 494C Internship, which provides one $2,000 award in the Fall semester, and one $2,000 award in the Spring semester. URBS 494C Interns will spend the semester contributing to the Library's digital collections with a focus on the American Planning Association, California Chapter Archives. They are selected by library faculty and staff in consultation with Urban Studies & Planning faculty.
Application Process
The URBS 494C Internship is awarded once each semester. Applicants must submit:
- Application: Complete and submit the online application, including:
- A statement of interest that does not exceed 500 words explaining why you are applying for the internship, what your academic and career goals are, and how the internship will support those goals.
Eligibility
URBS 494C Interns must be CSUN student in good academic standing who are enrolled in URBS 494C.
The CSUN Librarians Legacy Internship provides internships for students in an accredited graduate library or information school program. Students interested in completing an internship in Special Collections & Archives are welcome to apply.
