The Rice Paper Newsletter
October 28, 2025
Our Asian American Community Newsletter Collection holds 45 titles documenting this important part of the Los Angeles community. This collection was established in 1996 with funding from the University Library, the College of Humanities, the Asian American Studies Department, and the Times Mirror Foundation. The date range for the publications varies from around 1970 to about 2016. Rice Paper is one title from the Asian American Community Newsletters for which we have issues from 1977 to 2006.
Rice Paper continued publication through September 2023.
This newsletter was published by a nonprofit organization called the Asian American Drug Abuse Program (AADAP). In January of 1971, the Los Angeles Times ran an article titled “Drug problems among Asians spiraling in L.A.” In response to this challenge, the Los Angeles Asian American community established AADAP which was incorporated on December 13, 1972. For over 50 years, AADAP has prospered, now operating from nine locations throughout the Los Angeles area.
Rice Paper features numerous articles on various illegal drugs, including PCP and Cocaine. Beyond those articles, it also includes those on varied topics like incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, the Asian-influenced jazz fusion band Hiroshima, and anti-Asian hate crimes. Issues also include leisure activities typical of newspapers like crossword puzzles, and more.
