The Dr. Bonita J. Campbell WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Scholarship

Dr. Bonnie Campbell established a scholarship to support student employees of the University Library interested in pursuing careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields.

More than 125 student employees participate in a range of complex jobs in order to support the wide spectrum of services that are offered at the University Library. Among this group are aspiring STEM majors, who have benefited greatly from this scholarship. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Campbell for her generosity and passion for the success of our students.

Aashana's fascination with STEM began at a young age. Her father's early influence as a mechanical engineer inspired her to pursue a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering in India, where she honed her skills in fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and process control. Aashana is now pursuing a Master of Science in Engineering Management at CSUN, focusing on project management, supply chain management, data analytics, and lean manufacturing. Aashana is a dependable student assistant working at the Library Administration Office reception desk, where her professionalism and efficiency is greatly appreciated. It is an honor to recognize Aashana’s passion for science and technology and her mission to empower women in science and engineering.

Gurnoor Kaur

Making the journey from India to California in 2021, Gurnoor is now in her final year CSUN pursuing a Bachelor's in Computer Science. Working in Library Technology Services department, she is well-versed in both hardware and software, providing excellent customer service and troubleshooting assistance to CSUN students. Her dedication was recognized with a Class Three student supervisor promotion. Not only has Gurnoor earned a spot on the Dean's for six consecutive semesters, she also has been awarded honors such as NASA ARCS Fellowship, Presidential Scholar Award, and USU Board of Directors Leadership Award - to name a few. Gurnoor shared, "As a woman in STEM, I am deeply aware of the under-representation of women in the field, and I am committed to changing that. This scholarship will help me continue my journey."

Vaishnavi Sen

Vaishnavi is a Junior majoring in Computer Science, proudly on the Dean's List for five consecutive semesters at CSUN. One of her career ambitions is to work on a research project using artificial intelligence, or as a software developer for creating new technology - particularly in the field of medicine. After winning first place in the CSUN Spring 2023 App Jam, Vaishnavi was offered a job in CSUN IT on the team to bring the CSUN app redesign to life. She also assisted in a research project for the design of a Psychology Department website. As a member of the CSUN Girls Who Code club, Vaishnavi is fully connected and engaged with peers. In Library Technology Services, Vaishnavi possesses meticulous attention to detail, customer engagement skills, and advanced troubleshooting experience.

Making the journey from Ethiopia to Northridge back in 2017, Lidya will be graduating this May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. Lidya is an active member of the African Student Organization and of the National Society of Black Engineers, where she says she's "proud to be a part of an organization that impacts the Black community in a positive way." Lidya wishes to become the beacon of hope for her family and community back home.

Beatriz is one step closer to a career in aerospace engineering, as she'll be completing her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering this May. Going against all the social norms and stereotypes she grew up with, Beatriz has successfully overcome many challenges to achieve her goal in a male-dominated field of study. As a child raised in Mexico, Beatriz dreamed of reaching the sky, and touching the stars. Her dream is soon to come true as a proud, resilient graduate of CSUN and woman in STEM.

Roxana Ortiz, a third-year junior majoring in Civil Engineering, is on track to graduate in the spring of 2022. While her professional goal is to become an established Civil Engineer, Roxana feels a social responsibility to be a role model and advocate for young girls and women. "I want to lead by example and encourage girls from a young age to pursue STEM related fields".

Michelle Castaneda completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Technology in May of 2019. She looks forward to acquiring a job that facilitates the way humans interact with computers. She hopes to contribute to new technological developments that help alleviate or cure cancer patients in the near future, and is thankful to Dr. Bonita J. Campbell and CSUN WISE for helping her become one step closer towards her goals.

Ruby is majoring in Kinesiology/Sports Studies, with a career goal of WNBA or NBA sports management. While working as a student assistant in Special Collections and Archives, the scholarship has been a blessing to Ruby to help her financial situation, and a step closer to becoming a first generation college student. Ruby shared, "The Oviatt has become a home to me and has a support system that has become my family."

Lucila Broughton

Lucila is a Biology major, striving to become a certified nurse midwife/women's health practitioner. Her interest in women's health was ignited at a young age after witnessing the birth of her younger sisters. Lucila is a Community Outreach Prevention and Education health scholar at a local hospital, a member of the American Medical Student Association CSUN chapter, and she works with Chicanos for Community Medicine. She hopes to enter the Master's Entry Level Program in Nursing at University of California, San Francisco.

Ninsina is an Electrical Engineering major with an emphasis in Biomedical Engineering, working toward a career in Biotechnology. She is involved in the honors society of Eta Kappa Nu and Phi Theta Kappa and has been on the Dean's List since 2014. Ninsina's strong technical abilities are a valuable asset in the Reserve, Periodicals, & Microform department, as a Class III student assistant.
